Pubertal timing as an indicator of early life stress in Roman Italy and Roman Gaul

L. Creighton Avery et al.

Summary: This study compares pubertal timing and tempo in individuals from two Roman Imperial cemetery sites, integrating biological and social factors to better understand pubertal timing differences and their possible connection to Early Life Stress (ELS) and peri-pubertal stress. The results show similar patterns of pubertal timing and tempo between the two sites, with males aligning with ancient literary descriptions of key puberty milestones and females entering puberty earlier and experiencing an extended period, possibly due to gendered exposure to ELS and peri-pubertal stress influenced by their social status in the Roman Empire.

A high-resolution picture of kinship practices in an Early Neolithic tomb

Chris Fowler et al.

Summary: Through archaeological and genetic analyses, it was found that in Early Neolithic Britain, patrilineal descent played a key role in determining burial practices at Hazleton North long cairn, with evidence of male individuals reproducing with multiple women and maternal sub-lineages being recognized during the construction of the tomb. Additionally, social bonds independent of biological relatedness were also observed among individuals buried at the tomb.

Sex-specific morphs: the genetics and evolution of intra-sexual variation

Judith E. Mankf

Summary: Sex-specific morphs exhibit unique sexual dimorphism and diversity in animals. Recent genomic and transcriptomic studies have shed new light on the evolutionary origin and development of sex-specific morphs. These morphs have evolved independently in different animals and are often associated with alternative mating strategies. The diverse nature of sex-specific morphs provides opportunities to understand the genetic basis of complex phenotypes.

A qPCR-duplex assay for sex determination in ancient DNA

Anna Poma et al.

Summary: Molecular biology techniques are increasingly used in identifying the sex of skeletal remains, especially when traditional anthropometric analyzes are not successful. In this study, a qPCR-duplex method was used to determine the sex of both ancient and modern DNA samples. The validity of the method was verified on modern DNA, showing 100% accuracy in gender identification. This molecular technique is sensitive and precise, even on degraded DNA.

The diverse genetic origins of a Classical period Greek army

Laurie J. Reitsema et al.

Summary: Trade and colonization in the Mediterranean led to increased human mobility, while warfare played a significant role in cultural contact. By studying the genome-wide data of soldiers from the Greek colony of Himera, we found that many soldiers had ancestral origins in northern Europe, the Steppe, and the Caucasus. This highlights the importance of mercenaries in ancient Greek armies and sheds light on the continental-scale human mobility caused by participation in war in the Classical world.

CURRENT TRENDS IN METHODS FOR ESTIMATING AGE AND SEX FROM THE ADULT HUMAN SKELETON

Anezka Koterova et al.

Summary: This review discusses the accuracy, reliability, and reproducibility of various methodological approaches in estimating age-at-death and sex based on adult skeletal remains. It emphasizes the contributions of Vladimir Novotny to the development of current methods. Despite the use of molecular approaches, accurate and reliable morphological and metric methods are still necessary. The results of different methods complement each other, and modern imaging techniques and geometric morphometric methods have facilitated data acquisition. Estimating age-at-death remains difficult, and current methods can only estimate age accurately over wide intervals. The DSP method is becoming widely used for sex estimation, and software programs aid biological anthropologists in their research.

Sex estimation of teeth at different developmental stages using dimorphic enamel peptide analysis

Rebecca Gowland et al.

Summary: This study tested a new method of sex estimation using enamel peptides on deciduous and permanent teeth at different stages of mineralization, successfully determining the sex of 28 nonadult individuals. The minimally destructive and inexpensive nature of this procedure has significant implications for bioarchaeological studies of infancy and childhood.

Genomic transformation and social organization during the Copper Age-Bronze Age transition in southern Iberia

Vanessa Villalba-Mouco et al.

Summary: The transition from the Late Copper Age to the Bronze Age in southeastern Iberia was accompanied by social changes and a turnover in genetic lineages. The rise of the El Argar culture introduced steppe-related ancestry and a founder effect in male lineages, with potential additional genetic contributions from the Mediterranean region.

Sex estimation based on the analysis of enamel peptides: False assignments due to AMELY deletion

Iztok Stamfelj

Summary: The proteomic analysis of sex-specific amelogenin peptides in tooth enamel is a promising method for sex determination in human skeletal remains, but it has limitations due to technical issues and AMELY gene deletion, which may lead to misidentification of sex.

AMELY deletion is not detected in systematically sampled reference populations: A Reply to Stamfelj

Glendon J. Parker et al.

Summary: Biomolecular sex estimation using genomic and proteomic methods is a valuable tool in bioarchaeology, but has limitations and challenges that need to be addressed. Proteomic sex estimation based on amelogenin protein fragments in enamel is sensitive and quantifiable. Structural variants of the Y-chromosome and low peptide signals in mass spectrometry may complicate sex estimation results.
