The life and death of a subglacial lake in West Antarctica

M. R. Siegfried et al.

Summary: Over the past 50 years, the discovery and investigation of subglacial lakes in Antarctica have provided valuable information about paleoglaciology. In December 2018, the first in situ subglacial lake-sediment record was recovered from Mercer Subglacial Lake in West Antarctica. Through various techniques, we estimated the long-term mean lake sedimentation rates, suggesting a most likely age of 180 +/- 20 years before core recovery (BCR). This research demonstrates the significance of interconnected subglacial lake systems in understanding ice dynamics and highlights the potential of subglacial sediment archives as records of ice history.

Ancestral trans-North American Bell River system recorded in late Oligocene to early Miocene sediments in the Labrador Sea and Canadian Great Plains

Julia Corradino et al.

Summary: The Bell River hypothesis suggests the existence of a transcontinental river in northern North America during the Cenozoic Era. Researchers have analyzed detrital zircon grains and marine shell fragments to support this hypothesis and understand its implications for Labrador Sea circulation and chemistry.

Summary: The study on the recent recession of Steffen Glacier in Chilean Patagonia reveals that the growing proglacial lake has trapping and filtering effects on downstream sediment, impacting the sediment records.

The morphosedimentary record of glacial to postglacial environmental changes in fjord-lake Mekinac and adjacent areas (southeastern Canadian Shield)

Annie-Pier Trottier et al.

Summary: This study investigates the transition of a fjord basin into a lacustrine body in Lake Mekinac, documenting the evolution from the Late Pleistocene to the Holocene using swath bathymetry imagery and subbottom profiles. The analysis reveals that the sedimentation regime in the lake was mainly dependent on the sediment input regime and the transition from fjord to lake did not significantly influence sedimentation during deglaciation. Further research on dating the sediment deposits should provide a better assessment of natural hazards associated with seismic events.

An uncertainty-focused database approach to extract spatiotemporal trends from qualitative and discontinuous lake-status histories

Gijs De Cort et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new probabilistic analytical framework for reconstructing integrated environmental signals from lake status histories, which can identify major millennial-scale climatic phases and antiphased responses between lake basins. The framework uses a Monte Carlo algorithm to sample lake status histories within uncertainties, showing potential for efficient lake-status data synthesis and the incorporation of such data in palaeoclimate syntheses.
