Breeding and genomics approaches for improving phosphorus-use efficiency in grain legumes

Uday Chand Jha et al.

Summary: Phosphorus (P) is a crucial nutrient for plant growth, but its sources are non-renewable, raising concerns for sustainable agriculture and food security. Improving plant P-use efficiency (PUE) is necessary for intensive cropping systems, and this review explores various breeding approaches and tools to enhance PUE in grain legumes. The genetic architecture of PUE traits is complex, influenced by both genetics and the environment. Advances in genomics and functional genomics have provided insights into the underlying genetic mechanisms and pathways related to PUE, while novel breeding schemes and tools offer opportunities for designing P-use-efficient cultivars in low-P environments.

The wheat secreted root proteome: Implications for phosphorus mobilisation and biotic interactions

Christiana Staudinger et al.

Summary: Root-secreted acid phosphatases and organic anions are believed to be major factors in plant phosphorus (P) mobilization under P limiting conditions. However, other mechanisms also play a role, especially in species with fine roots. This study characterized the proteins in wheat root tip mucilage, soluble root secretions, and root tip proteomes. The results showed that proteins in the mucilage have the potential to modify the plant's immediate environment. Wheat acid phosphatases appear to have a minor role in P mobilization beyond the root surface.

A proteomic analysis of Arabidopsis ribosomal phosphoprotein P1A mutant

Bingjuan Li et al.

Summary: The knockout of ribosomal phosphoprotein P1A (RPP1A) results in larger seeds by repressing carbon metabolism and lipid biosynthesis, and increasing the synthesis of seed storage proteins. The study provides new insights into the genetic regulation of seed size and seed storage protein accumulation, potentially aiding in enhancing crop seed size.

Differentially reset transcriptomes and genome bias response orchestrate wheat response to phosphate deficiency

Ruonan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the global transcriptional response of wheat to phosphorus deficiency. The researchers found genome-wide transcriptome resetting and differential expression of genes under phosphorus deficiency. They also identified alterations in multiple metabolic pathways related to secondary metabolites, transcription factors, and phosphorus uptake. This study provides important insights into the genomic changes of wheat during phosphorus starvation and has the potential to assist in the development of phosphorus-efficient wheat cultivars.

Comparative proteomics reveals new insights into the endosperm responses to drought, salinity and submergence in germinating wheat seeds

Mingke Yan et al.

Summary: The endosperm of wheat seeds plays a role as a nutrient reservoir during germination and responds to different abiotic stresses through modification of protein profiles. Functional classification of differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) under PEG, NaCl and submergence treatments revealed their involvement in protein, amino acid and organic acid metabolic processes, with specific metabolic pathways highlighted in each stress condition. The identification of stress-related proteins and their biased expression in different stresses suggests an active stress-responding role of endosperm beyond nutrient storage during germination.
