Space charge layer evolution at yttria-stabilized zirconia grain boundaries upon operation of solid oxide fuel cells

Yun Chen et al.

Summary: This study possibly provides the first experimental evidence of space charge layer evolution of grain boundaries in yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) in a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) composite anode. It is found that under humidified H2 fuel, a discrete core-shell structure develops along the YSZ/YSZ grain boundary planes, where the core has a lower mass with Y-depleted ZrO2-x and the shell has a constant thickness of about 1 nm and is Y-enriched.

Modeling Ni redistribution in the hydrogen electrode of solid oxide cells through Ni(OH)2 diffusion and Ni-YSZ wettability change

Yinkai Lei et al.

Summary: Ni redistribution in the hydrogen electrodes of solid oxide cells is an important degradation mechanism. This study investigates the interplay between Ni(OH)2 diffusion and Ni-YSZ wettability change, and identifies the driving force of Ni spreading/detachment and the factors affecting Ni redistribution. Two missing pieces in current theory of Ni redistribution are also identified.

Phase field simulation of anode microstructure evolution of solid oxide fuel cell through Ni(OH)2 diffusion

Yinkai Lei et al.

Summary: The study found that under strictly humid conditions, while the presence of steam gradient leads to nickel redistribution, the formation and diffusion of Ni(OH)(2) do not significantly change the nickel coarsening rate. It is concluded that other competing mechanisms must be responsible for the observed nickel redistribution and enhanced coarsening under humid conditions.

Ni migration of Ni-YSZ electrode in solid oxide electrolysis cell: An integrated model study

Yang Wang et al.

Summary: Through a comprehensive numerical study, it was found that nickel depletion in the fuel electrode of SOEC can lead to nickel phase coarsening, consequently reducing the electrochemical performance of the electrode. Increasing the wettability of the nickel phase can effectively mitigate the reduction of active reaction sites caused by nickel coarsening.

Quantifying the performance evolution of solid oxide fuel cells during initial aging process

Zewei Lyu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the degradation mechanisms in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) during initial aging process, with a focus on anode charge transfer reactions and ionic transport being the main contributors to the voltage degradation. The deterioration of the anode/electrolyte interface caused by nickel redistribution is identified as the dominant degradation mechanism.

The oxygen partial pressure in solid oxide electrolysis cells with multilayer electrolytes

Qian Zhang et al.

Summary: The study uses an electrolyte charge carrier transport model and a diffuse interface treatment for multilayer electrolytes to quantify oxygen potentials and provide insights into degradation mechanisms observed during long-term operation of solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOEC). The model describes the transport of charge carriers in the electrolyte and identifies quantities characterizing the distribution of oxygen partial pressure in the electrolyte, which are directly related to degradation mechanisms. Analytical estimates are provided for guidance on parameters needed to suppress degradation in the electrolyte.

Ni migration in solid oxide cell electrodes: Review and revised hypothesis

Mogens B. Mogensen et al.

Summary: The degradation mechanism of Ni-YSZ electrodes in SOCs is complex and contradictory, characterized by loss of electrical contact between Ni particles and migration of Ni in the most active part. These issues are significant obstacles to the commercialization of SOC systems.

CO2 electrolysis - Gas impurities and electrode overpotential causing detrimental carbon deposition

A. Hauch et al.

Summary: This study explored the potential of using solid oxide electrolysis cells for CO2 electrolysis and found that impurities in CO2 may lead to electrode degradation. Testing revealed that different types of SOECs exhibited high degradation rates when part of the produced CO was recycled, suggesting issues with impurities in CO2. Additionally, cleaning the inlet CO2 gas stream was identified as a method to mitigate the degradation of fuel electrodes.
