A comprehensive review of solid oxide fuel cells operating on various promising alternative fuels

Qidong Xu et al.

Summary: This article comprehensively reviews the electrochemical performances and stabilities of SOFCs operating on various fuels. Although comparable power densities to hydrogen were frequently obtained, degradation problems induced by these fuels influence the long-term stable operation of SOFCs. Potential strategies from three perspectives of thermodynamics, kinetics and structure are proposed to solve degradation issues. The remaining challenges and future prospects of SOFCs fed by each fuel are separately elaborated.

Experimental investigations of cell resistances to characterize the concentration polarization behavior of 10 x10 cm2 solid oxide fuel cells

Jihao Zhang et al.

Summary: High fuel utilization rate is crucial for achieving high power generation efficiency in solid oxide fuel cells, but severe concentration polarization poses a challenge to cell performance. Cell resistance is a more suitable and robust criterion for limiting current behavior, and setting a resistance threshold can help maintain safe operating status, especially for industrial SOFCs. The stable relationship between high reactant utilization rate and limiting current behavior provides valuable information for fuel sensitivity analysis.

Condition monitoring of solid oxide fuel cells by fast electrochemical impedance spectroscopy: A case example of detecting deficiencies in fuel supply

Gjorgji Nusev et al.

Summary: This study investigates the internal condition of a 6-cell solid oxide fuel cell stack during a 3600-hour test with short fuel starvation intervals, analyzing the relationship between condition changes, impedance spectra, and equivalent circuit model parameters. Features indicating reduced fuel supply are identified.

A practical approach for identifying various polarization behaviors of redox-stable electrodes in symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells

Jihao Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a systematic and practical approach was utilized to investigate the elementary reaction processes and rate-limiting steps of redox-stable electrodes in symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells, with the application of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technology. The results showed that the rate-limiting steps of the cathode are associated with the formation of adsorbed oxygen ions and the combination of oxygen ions and oxygen vacancies, while the rate-limiting steps of the anode are attributed to the processes of hydrogen dissociated adsorption and steam desorption.
