The effect of pH on boron toxicity and nutrient uptake by wheat and rapeseed

Sajid Masood et al.

Summary: The pH and high boron concentration can affect the growth and nutrient uptake of plants. Low pH promotes boron accumulation in roots and shoots. The combination of high pH and high boron concentration decreases plant biomass and nutrient concentrations.

Insight into the Root Transcriptome of a Boron-Tolerant Triticum zhukovskyi Genotype Grown under Boron Toxicity

Anamika Pandey et al.

Summary: Boron (B) toxicity is a significant abiotic stress that detrimentally affects agriculture, particularly in arid areas. This study investigated the transcriptomic response of a B-toxicity-tolerant Triticum zhukovskyi genotype to high B levels. The findings revealed differentially expressed genes, transcription factors, and pathways associated with the response to B toxicity, offering potential candidate genes for future breeding programs.

Alleviation of boron toxicity in plants: Mechanisms and approaches

Tianwei Hua et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes recent advances in mechanisms and approaches for alleviating boron toxicity in plants. Three main mechanisms have been outlined: reducing tissue boron concentration, decreasing cellular active boron, and enhancing physiological tolerance. The alleviative approaches include applying nutrient elements, plant growth regulators, plant growth-promoting microbes, as well as leaching boron out of the topsoil and washing boron off plant leaves. Future studies will focus on more practical approaches for alleviating boron toxicity and a better understanding of related mechanisms.

Cross species multi-omics reveals cell wall sequestration and elevated global transcript abundance as mechanisms of boron tolerance in plants

Guannan Wang et al.

Summary: Boron toxicity is a global issue for crops, with limited understanding of genetic responses and adaptation mechanisms in plants. Studying Arabidopsis and Schrenkiella parvula revealed the extremophyte's efficiency in excluding excess boron and maintaining lower boron concentrations, using cell walls as a storage site. Excess boron may interrupt RNA metabolism, highlighting the importance of maintaining ribose-containing compounds. The transcriptome of Schrenkiella parvula is pre-adapted to boron toxicity, sharing similarities with Arabidopsis in response to boron stress. Cell wall sequestration and increased global transcript levels are key mechanisms for sustaining plant growth under boron toxicity.

Boron-toxicity induced changes in cell wall components, boron forms, and antioxidant defense system in rice seedlings

Muhammad Riaz et al.

Summary: Boron is an essential micronutrient for plant growth, but excessive use can lead to toxicity. This study found that high concentrations of boron inhibited root and shoot growth in rice seedlings, causing stress symptoms on leaves and oxidative damage.

Do bagasse biochar and microbial inoculants positively affect barley grain yield and nutrients, and microbial activity?

Elias Hosseini et al.

Summary: The utilization of biochar and microbial bio-fertilizers has shown significant improvements in barley yield, root colonization, grain nutrient uptake, soil microbial respiration, and microbial biomass in calcareous soil. Application of plant growth promoting microorganisms and bagasse biochar simultaneously has positive effects on both barley production and microbial activities, serving as a promising strategy for sustainable agriculture.
