Influence of salinity stress on PSII in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) genotypes, probed by chlorophyll-a fluorescence

Muhammad Salim Akhter et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the changes in the efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) in barley genotypes with different salt tolerances, revealing that salt stress caused photoinhibition of PSII. Some JIP-test parameters can be potential phenotype markers for screening salt-tolerant genotypes.

StCaM2, a calcium binding protein, alleviates negative effects of salinity and drought stress in tobacco

Meenakshi Raina et al.

Summary: Overexpression of StCaM2 in tobacco enhances plant growth, salinity and drought tolerance by improving photosynthetic efficiency, ROS scavenging, and reducing membrane injury. StCaM2 was found to have the largest number of abiotic stress responsive promoter elements among the identified CaM isoforms in potato, and showed upregulation under selected abiotic stress conditions. The increased tolerance to salt and drought stress in transgenic tobacco plants overexpressing StCaM2 is associated with better performance in photosystem II and a favorable K+/Na+ ratio.

Salinity Stress Affects Photosynthesis, Malondialdehyde Formation, and Proline Content in Portulaca oleracea L.

Helena Hnilickova et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of salt stress on Portulaca oleracea L. at salinity levels of 100 and 300 mM NaCl. It was found that the plant showed tolerance to lower levels of salt stress but exhibited negative impacts on physiological and biochemical parameters at higher salt concentrations. The results suggest the potential use of P. oleracea in saline environments, although further research is needed to fully understand its salt tolerance mechanisms.

SA-Mediated Regulation and Control of Abiotic Stress Tolerance in Rice

Kalaivani Nadarajah et al.

Summary: Environmental or abiotic stresses pose a common threat to all plants, including rice, and studies have shown that salicylic acid (SA) plays a significant role in regulating abiotic stress in rice. However, the mechanisms behind this role are still unclear and further research is needed to understand the potential mechanisms controlling SA-mediated stress tolerance in rice.

Assessing saffron response to salinity stress and alleviating potential of gamma amino butyric acid, salicylic acid and vermicompost extract on salt damage

Hassan Feizi et al.

Summary: This study found that under saline water irrigation, saffron can increase root density, produce larger and heavier corms, and promote Na+ exclusion and K+ accumulation as main tolerance mechanisms, which help it produce a satisfactory economical yield. The foliar application treatments, especially VCE, could negate the negative impacts of salinity by remedying nutrient deficiency and improving aerial K+/Na+ ratio in salinity conditions. Triggering antioxidant defense system was the most notable mechanism of GABA and SA in alleviating the adverse effects of salt stress on saffron.

Improving Performance of Salt-Grown Crops by Exogenous Application of Plant Growth Regulators

Md. Quamruzzaman et al.

Summary: Soil salinity is a major stressor for plant growth, and the application of plant growth regulators (PGRs) is a potential solution to mitigate salinity-induced yield losses. However, the effectiveness of PGRs is influenced by factors such as genotype, timing of application, and salinity levels, making their practical application limited. Breeding crops for salinity tolerance remains a more reliable approach to minimize the impact of salinity on plant growth and yield, with further research needed to understand the mechanisms of interaction between PGRs and membrane transporters mediating plant ion homeostasis.
