Plant-derived ribosome-inactivating proteins involved in defense against plant viruses

Summary: Plant viruses are serious pathogens that cause severe damage to crops globally. Developing induced resistance in plants against viruses, particularly using ribosome inactivating proteins (RIPs) from non-host plants, is an effective approach. The use of RIPs has shown potential in inhibiting virus multiplication in host plants and reducing the impact of virus infections.

Isolation, Characterization and Biological Action of Type-1 Ribosome-Inactivating Proteins from Tissues of Salsola soda L.

Summary: In this study, a group of new ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs) called sodins were isolated from Salsola soda L., including five proteins from seeds, one protein from edible leaves, and one protein from roots. The sodins exhibited ribosome-inactivating and protein synthesis inhibiting activities, as well as polynucleotide:adenosine glycosylase activity and cytotoxicity towards cell lines. Particularly, sodin 5 showed antifungal activity against Penicillium digitatum.

Recombinant pebulin protein, a type 2 ribosome-inactivating protein isolated from dwarf elder (Sambucus ebulus L.) shows anticancer and antifungal activities in vitro

Summary: In this study, a new type 2 RIP sequence (pebulin) was isolated and cloned from dwarf elder native to Iran. The recombinant pebulin protein was expressed in E. coli with the help of a chaperone plasmid and low temperature incubation to enhance solubility. Hemagglutination, anticancer, and antifungal assays showed that pebulin agglutinated erythrocytes, inhibited cancer cell proliferation, and had growth-inhibiting effects against plant pathogenic fungi.

Antiviral Activity of Ribosome-Inactivating Proteins
