Exercise modifies the disease- relevant gut microbial shifts in post- traumatic osteoarthritis rats

X. Hao et al.

Summary: Exercise is effective at maintaining the integrity of the cartilage-subchondral bone unit in post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). This study revealed that exercise reduces systemic inflammation and microbiome-derived metabolites in PTOA. The changes in the gut microbiome may contribute to the beneficial effects of exercise on PTOA.

Impact of Controlling Abnormal Joint Movement on the Effectiveness of Subsequent Exercise Intervention in Mouse Models of Early Knee Osteoarthritis

Yuichiro Oka et al.

Summary: The study showed that the intra-articular environment greatly influences the effect of exercise on cartilage degeneration, even under the same conditions. Normalizing joint movement can alleviate abnormal mechanical stress such as shear force and compression force accompanying ACL cutting. These findings emphasize the need to consider intervention to correct abnormal joint movement before prescribing physical exercise in the treatment of OA.

SOX9 keeps growth plates and articular cartilage healthy by inhibiting chondrocyte dedifferentiation/osteoblastic redifferentiation

Abdul Haseeb et al.

Summary: SOX9 is essential for embryonic chondrogenesis, and its deficiency in postnatal stages leads to growth-plate closure and deterioration of articular cartilage. The absence of SOX9 prompts growth-plate chondrocytes to rapidly reach a terminal/dedifferentiated stage and undergo overt osteoblastogenesis. Further research reveals the role of SOX9 in controlling TGF beta and BMP signaling activities during chondrocyte lineage transition.

Treadmill Exercise after Controlled Abnormal Joint Movement Inhibits Cartilage Degeneration and Synovitis

Yuichiro Oka et al.

Summary: The study aimed to suppress cartilage degeneration by controlling abnormal joint movement and treadmill exercise. The results showed that mice with controlled abnormal joint movement had lower cartilage degeneration than those in the exercise group, indicating the potential therapeutic effects of normalizing joint motion and anti-inflammatory effects of treadmill exercise on cartilage degeneration.
