D-C4N3: A superhard ferromagnetic half-metal predicted by first-principles study

Yan Qian et al.

Summary: In this study, a new type of superhard material C4N3 with ferromagnetic half-metallicity was discovered using swarm-intelligence based structural prediction and first-principles calculations. The superhard nature of the material is attributed to strong C-C and C-N covalent bonds, while its half-metallic property arises from dangling bonds of threefold coordinated C atoms. This work extends the electronic property of superhard materials and may have potential applications in spintronics.

Dense as diamond: Pn-C10, a superhard sp3 carbon allotrope

Shuaiqi Li et al.

Summary: Pn-C-10 is a carbon allotrope with rhombic symmetry and high crystal density of 3.56g/cm(3), exhibiting excellent mechanical properties and slight anisotropy in elasticity as an indirect-bandgap material with a bandgap of 5.05eV. Further studies into Pn-C-10 and other carbon phases were supported by natural tiling analysis, simulations of x-ray diffraction, and Raman spectra.

Superhard carbon-rich C-N compounds hidden in compression of the mixture of carbon black and tetracyanoethylene

Zihe Li et al.

Summary: The recent successful synthesis of Pnnm-CN structure has inspired researchers to explore new superhard 3D C-N compounds through high-pressure and high-temperature experiments involving carbon and nitrogen elements. Four novel carbon-rich C-N compounds have been proposed in this study, which may coexist with the unidentified simple cubic carbon phase in shock compression products. Calculations show that these compounds are more easily synthesized than previously used carbon structures, indicating the potential synthesis of C-N compounds in this experiment. This study provides a new direction for experimental research on C-N compounds and prompts a reevaluation of previous findings.

Fused borophenes: A new family of superhard light-weight materials

Santanu Saha et al.

Summary: The search for new superhard materials has been driven by industrial demands for low-cost alternatives to diamond and c-BN, such as metal borides. Fused borophenes (FBs), a new family of superhard materials with 2D boron layers interlinked to form a 3D network, have Vicker's hardness comparable to the best commercial metal borides. Due to their low formation enthalpies, FBs could be synthesized through high-temperature methods or quenching of high-pressure phases.
