Metasurface-loaded printed monopole antenna: tailoring impedance for wideband radiation

Summary: This paper proposes a method of designing a wideband printed monopole antenna by loading metasurface on its back. The metasurface can behave inductively or capacitively, and by adjusting its geometrical parameters, the impedance of the metasurface can be tailored to compensate the mismatched impedance of the original printed monopole. The designed PMA achieves highly efficient omnidirectional radiation in the frequency range of 2.50-4.75 GHz.
