Double-layer structure of the Pt(111)-aqueous electrolyte interface

Kasinath Ojha et al.

Summary: This study presents detailed measurements of the double-layer capacitance at the Pt(111)-electrolyte interface near the potential of zero charge (PZC). Strong deviations from traditional Gouy-Chapman-Stern behavior are observed at low electrolyte concentrations, independent of the nature of the electrolyte ions. The capacitance further away from PZC and the trends for increasing ion concentration show ion-specific effects related to ion size or hydration strength. A model is formulated to explain the structure of the electric double layer at the Pt(111)-electrolyte interface, going beyond the Gouy-Chapman-Stern theory.

Magnetic domain scanning imaging using phase-sensitive THz-pulse detection

Finn-Frederik Stiewe et al.

Summary: In this study, we use THz radiation to determine the alignment of magnetic domains in a CoFeB layer. By generating THz pulses using fs laser pulses in magnetized CoFeB/Pt heterostructures based on spin currents, and detecting the radiation phase-sensitively using an LT-GaAs Auston switch, we are able to determine the magnetization alignment. Our scanning technique with motorized stages allows us to image two dimensional magnetic structures, and by using near-field imaging, we can enhance the spatial resolution. We prepare spintronic emitters of diverse geometric shapes and sizes to observe the formation of magnetization patterns, and demonstrate the influence of external magnetic fields on the alignment of emitted THz radiation. The combination of this method with THz range spectroscopic information makes it interesting for wider applications in probing high-resolution THz excitation in spin systems.

Design and Analysis of CubeSat Microwave Radiometer Constellations to Observe Temporal Variability of the Atmosphere

Yuriy V. Goncharenko et al.

Summary: Passive microwave satellite observations are crucial for global forecast models, especially in cloudy and/or precipitating conditions. Current operational polar orbiters have limited temporal sampling capability, which cannot capture rapidly changing conditions like convective storm development. The recent development of miniaturized microwave radiometers on low-cost CubeSat satellites has the potential to significantly improve the temporal and spatial sampling of microwave observations, particularly over open-ocean weather systems.

Hot electron cooling in InSb probed by ultrafast time-resolved terahertz cyclotron resonance

Chelsea Q. Xia et al.

Summary: A new time-resolved magneto-THz spectroscopy technique is proposed and demonstrated, allowing for the measurement of electron cyclotron effective mass in semiconductors and verifying mass changes during electron cooling in specific semiconductor materials. The study also found that the measured electron effective mass using this technique agrees well with theoretical predictions.

Intense terahertz pulses inhibit Ras signaling and other cancer-associated signaling pathways in human skin tissue models

Cameron M. Hough et al.

Summary: Intense pulses of Terahertz radiation can induce significant non-thermal biological effects on human skin, impacting differential gene expression profiles and signaling pathways perturbation. This could potentially lead to the suppression of cancer-related signaling pathways and pro-mitotic activities in diseased tissues.

Macroscopic quantum electrodynamics approach to nonlinear optics and application to polaritonic quantum-vacuum detection

Frieder Lindel et al.

Summary: This paper provides an in-depth discussion of a theoretical framework for predicting the electromagnetic field in nonlinear crystals, introduces a diagrammatic approach for representing nonlinear processes, and analyzes the parameters in electro-optic sampling experiments. The study includes analytical results for electro-optic sampling and comparisons between theoretical predictions and experimental data.

High-power portable terahertz laser systems

Ali Khalatpour et al.

Summary: Terahertz frequencies are underutilized due to the lack of powerful and compact sources, but the invention of THz quantum cascade lasers has helped bridge this gap and expand potential applications. However, the technology is still limited by demanding cooling requirements, restricting its practical use outside of laboratory settings.
