Rapid preparation of porous carbon by flame burning carbonization method for supercapacitor

Bolang Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the feasibility of fabricating porous biocarbon materials through a simple and quick flame burning carbonization synthetic strategy was investigated. Cotton, dandelion, and catkin, which are fluffy and contain lots of air between the tissues, were easily carbonized. K2CO3-KCl acted as an activator, template agent, and surface cover to isolate air with biocarbon and prevent biomass burn out. The prepared carbon exhibited a hierarchical porous structure, large specific surface area, and abundant heteroatoms doping, showing a high specific capacitance of 367 F g-1 in 6 M KOH. Moreover, a large voltage window of K2CO3-glycol-arginine electrolyte was prepared, and the assembled symmetric supercapacitor exhibited an energy density of 30.7 Wh kg-1 and a wide operating temperature range from -25 to 100 degrees C. The practicability of the flame burning rapid carbonization strategy, recycling of K salt, and large-scale production were verified.

Yunhui Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, nickel-doped carbon dots (Ni-CDs) with tunable fluorescence emission were successfully synthesized using a simple one-step solvothermal method. The introduction of Ni enhanced the fluorescence intensity and caused a redshift. Electron-phonon coupling-assisted universal red luminescence of o-phenylenediamine-based carbon dots

Boyang Wang et al.

Summary: The photoluminescence mechanism of carbon dots (CDs) remains unclear due to their complex core-shell structure and variety of surface functional groups. In this study, we prepared six different oPD-based CDs and found that they had almost the same PL emission and absorption spectra after purification. Structural and spectral characterization revealed similar carbon core structures but different surface polymer shells. Single-molecule PL spectroscopy confirmed that the multi-modal emission of those CDs originated from the transitions of different vibrational energy levels of the same PL center in the carbon core. Theoretical calculations provided insights into the potential polymerization mode and carbon core structure. Additionally, the phenomenon of spectral splitting of single-particle CDs was observed at low temperature, indicating their unique properties as both organic molecules and quantum dots.
