A roadmap to decipher ultrafast photophysics in two-dimensional nanomaterials

Pieter Schiettecatte et al.

Summary: Atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors are important for optoelectronic applications, but the nonlinear optical response is masked by congested spectral information. In this paper, a roadmap for analyzing congested datasets of various 2D materials using transient absorption (TA) is outlined, emphasizing the synergy between qualitative understanding of the transient photo-response and quantitative spectral deconvolution.

Untangling the intertwined: metallic to semiconducting phase transition of colloidal MoS2 nanoplatelets and nanosheets

Andre Niebur et al.

Summary: 2D semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) show an ultrafast response to optical stimuli, making them highly promising for future optoelectronic applications. Colloidal nanochemistry is an emerging synthesis method for controlling the reaction and producing 2D TMDC nanosheets with small lateral sizes. In this study, the synthesis of 2D mono- and bilayer MoS2 nanoplatelets and MoS2 nanosheets was achieved by adjusting the molybdenum precursor concentration. The resulting MoS2 nanosheets underwent a transformation to the semiconducting crystal phase, showing potential for future colloidal photonics applications.

Colloidal Continuous Injection Synthesis of Fluorescent MoX2 (X = S, Se) Nanosheets as a First Step Toward Photonic Applications

Gabriele Pippia et al.

Summary: Transition-metal dichalcogenide nano-sheets have attracted significant attention in the field of 2D nanomaterials due to their direct semiconductor nature and broken inversion symmetry in odd-layer number. Colloidal synthesis has emerged as a cost-efficient and scalable method, but obtaining monolayers remains challenging.

Superacid Treatment on Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Daisuke Kiriya et al.

Summary: In this review paper, the authors summarize and discuss the recent works on the superacid treatment of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) flakes, such as MoS2 and WS2, using bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (TFSI) as the superacid molecule. They find that the superacid treatment can dramatically enhance the optical properties of TMDCs, especially the photoluminescence intensity. However, further studies are needed to understand the mechanism of the superacid treatment and explore its potential applications in monolayer TMDCs.

Unraveling the Photophysics of Liquid-Phase Exfoliated Two-Dimensional ReS2 Nanoflakes

Pieter Schiettecatte et al.

Summary: In this study, the nature and dynamics of charge carriers in highly crystalline liquid-phase exfoliated ReS2 were analyzed using a unique combination of experimental techniques. Two distinct time regimes were identified, both dominated by unbound charge carriers despite a high exciton binding energy. The results indicate the potential of ReS2 to produce mobile free charge carriers, which is relevant for photovoltaic applications.

Room Temperature Micro-Photoluminescence Studies of Colloidal WS2 Nanosheets

Andre Philipp Frauendorf et al.

Summary: Wet-chemical synthesis methods have been shown to be promising for the straightforward solution-processing of quasi two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), with their photoluminescence properties virtually unexplored. This study demonstrates room temperature micro-PL of delicate ultrathin colloidal WS2 nanosheets synthesized from WCl6 and elemental sulfur, revealing comparable characteristics to exfoliated TMD monolayers and promising long-term air stability. These results suggest colloidal TMDs as easily synthesized and highly promising 2D semiconductors with optical properties fully competitive with conventionally fabricated ultrathin TMDs.

Generating Triplets in Organic Semiconductor Tetracene upon Photoexcitation of Transition Metal Dichalcogenide ReS2

Sourav Maiti et al.

Summary: The study found that in a bilayer of ReS2 and tetracene, the transfer of photoexcited states from ReS2 to triplet states in tetracene occurred within 5 ps with an efficiency near 38%. This opens up new possibilities for heterostructure design of two-dimensional materials with suitable organics to produce long-lived triplets. Triplets have potential applications in optoelectronics, photovoltaics, photocatalysis, and photon upconversion.

Observation of quantum-confined exciton states in monolayer WS2 quantum dots by ultrafast spectroscopy

Shu-Wen Zheng et al.

Summary: Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide quantum dots show unique photophysical properties due to quantum confinement effects, with direct observations of exciton states in WS2 QDs. The band structure in monolayer WS2 QDs undergoes complete change compared to nanosheets, indicating potential applications in understanding exciton relaxation mechanisms.
