Factors influencing surface carbon contamination in ambient-pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy experiments

Nicolo' Comini et al.

Summary: Carbon contamination is a significant issue in surface science experiments and can affect experimental results. Various factors and environmental conditions, such as beam illumination and residual gas pressure, play roles in the build-up of carbon on the surface. Introducing molecular oxygen allows for fast surface cleaning, and competitive adsorption of water molecules can lead to the progressive removal of carbon species from chamber walls.
