Spatiotemporally Controlled Access to Photoluminescence Dark State of 2D Monolayer Semiconductor by FRAP Microscopy

Hua Su et al.

Summary: This study utilizes FRAP microscopy to manipulate and monitor the dynamics of photoexcited carriers in attractive 2D transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers, revealing a photoinduced dedoping effect in 1L-TMDs and demonstrating the kinetic tuning of photo-dedoping by environmental factors and laser parameters. This highlights the power of FRAP microscopy in exploring the impact of photoexcited carrier dynamics on the photoluminescence properties of semiconductors, offering insights for understanding light-emitting mechanisms and optimizing operational parameters for optoelectronic devices.

Fast Surface Restructuring within the Gap of Au Nanocube Dimer for the Enhancement of Catalytic Efficiency

Xiao Wang et al.

Summary: Identification of catalytic dynamics and plasmonic effects is crucial for designing heterogeneous catalysts. However, the understanding of the plasmonic effect on catalytic dynamics at the single-particle level is still limited. Using single-molecule fluorescence microscopy, researchers found that the coupled Au nanocube dimer (AuCD) exhibited a significant enhancement in catalytic efficiency. This enhancement was attributed to the spontaneous dynamic surface restructuring, which was influenced by the plasmonic nanogap and the electromagnetic hot spot.

Spatiotemporal imaging of charge transfer in photocatalyst particles

Ruotian Chen et al.

Summary: The water-splitting reaction using photocatalyst particles is a promising route for solar fuel production. In this study, researchers performed spatiotemporally resolved surface photovoltage measurements on cuprous oxide photocatalyst particles and found that photogenerated electrons are transferred to the catalytic surface quickly through inter-facet hot electron transfer, while photogenerated holes are transferred to a spatially separated surface and stabilized through selective trapping. These findings contribute to the efficient charge separation in photocatalysis and have implications for the rational design of photocatalysts.

Single-molecule photocatalytic dynamics at individual defects in two-dimensional layered materials

Teng-Xiang Huang et al.

Summary: By gaining insight into the catalytic dynamics at individual structural defects of two-dimensional materials, we quantitatively revealed heterogeneous photocatalytic dynamics and surface diffusion behaviors, finding that vacancies exhibit the highest catalytic activity and more active defects have lower reactant adsorption strength and slower product dissociation/diffusion rates.

Dynamically Monitoring the Photodeposition of Single Cocatalyst Nanoparticles on Semiconductors via Fluorescence Imaging

Hua Su et al.

Summary: Loading cocatalysts through photodeposition is a promising method for improving semiconductor photocatalytic activities, but the growth kinetics of cocatalysts during the process has remained largely unknown. This study dynamically imaged the photodeposition of single cocatalysts on semiconductors and revealed self-limited growth and significant heterogeneities. Programmable photodeposition and dissolution of CoxP was also achieved using a focused laser beam. This work provides insights into optimizing photodeposition for designing more efficient photocatalysts.

A microwell array-based approach for studying single nanoparticle catalysis with high turnover frequency

Jia Gao et al.

Summary: A method based on microwell array was developed to measure the photocatalytic kinetics of single CdS nanoparticles with high TOF. The study revealed two types of catalytical behaviors during single CdS photocatalysis: a rapid decline in activity for most CdS NPs and an initial increase in activity followed by a decrease for a minor population of individuals. This new method will facilitate the investigation of catalytic activities of single particles under realistic conditions and has great potential in various fields including photo/electro-catalysts, enzymes, and functional bacteria.

Single-Molecule Colocalization of Redox Reactions on Semiconductor Photocatalysts Connects Surface Heterogeneity and Charge-Carrier Separation in Bismuth Oxybromide

Meikun Shen et al.

Summary: The study investigates the photocatalytic oxidation and reduction reactions of bismuth oxybromide nanoplates using single-molecule fluorescence imaging, revealing two distinct photochemical behaviors within the same batch of samples. The results suggest that defect-free regions promote the colocalization of electrons and holes, while defects selectively extract one carrier type by trapping either electrons or holes.
