Solid-liquid-gas reaction accelerated by gas molecule tunnelling-like effect

Wen Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, we used liquid-cell transmission electron microscopy to observe the accelerated etching of gold nanorods with oxygen nanobubbles in aqueous hydrobromic acid in real-time. Our findings show that when an oxygen nanobubble is close to a nanorod below a critical distance, the local etching rate increases significantly. Molecular dynamics simulation results reveal that the strong attractive van der Waals interaction between the gold nanorod and oxygen molecules facilitates the transport of oxygen through the thin liquid layer to the gold surface, thereby increasing the etching rate.

Radiolysis-Driven Evolution of Gold Nanostructures - Model Verification by Scale Bridging In Situ Liquid-Phase Transmission Electron Microscopy and X-Ray Diffraction

Birk Fritsch et al.

Summary: Utilizing ionizing radiation for in situ studies in liquid media allows for unique insights into the dynamics of nanostructure formation. Through kinetic simulations, researchers have demonstrated that these models provide a comprehensive understanding of reaction mechanisms and their applications in liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The study also revealed the dependency of oxidative etching on precursor concentration and dose rate, and how it can be used to analyze the shift in Gibbs free energy landscape induced by electron beam.

Controlling the Wet-Etch Directionality in Nanostructured Silicon

Zainul Aabdin et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the ability to control the etching direction of silicon crystal planes through mechanical agitation of the etchant. Through molecular dynamics simulations, it was found that the Si(OH)4 etch byproducts have a higher affinity to the Si {110} planes, leading to the switching of the etch anisotropy.

In Situ Liquid Cell Transmission Electron Microscopy Investigation on the Dissolution-Regrowth Mechanism Dominating the Shape Evolution of Silver Nanoplates

Meng Dong et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the selective convex etching of chloride ions results in suborbicular nanoplates as the intermediate shape during the evolution trajectory of triangular nanoplates into hexagonal nanoplates. The atomic-scale {111} stacking faults in triangular nanoplates induce the side regrowth of suborbicular nanoplates, leading to the formation of hexagonal nanoplates with six {422} edges. This dissolution-regrowth evolution process provides new insight into the growth mechanisms of anisotropic silver nanostructures.

Enhancing and Mitigating Radiolytic Damage to Soft Matter in Aqueous Phase Liquid-Cell Transmission Electron Microscopy in the Presence of Gold Nanoparticle Sensitizers or Isopropanol Scavengers

Joanna Korpanty et al.

Summary: In the study, the radiolytic environment experienced by a polymer in water during LCTEM was examined, showing the significant mitigation effect of IPA on polymer damage and the enhancement effect of GNPs. The combination of experiments and simulations provided a generalizable strategy for assessing radiolysis mitigation or enhancement. The study highlights the caution needed for LCTEM experiments involving inorganic nanoparticles and suggests an increased use of scavengers for various LCTEM studies.

Summary: Theoretical investigation on electron collision with liquid water is conducted in this article, covering the major channels of ionization, inelastic, elastic, and total scattering. The study utilizes liquid phase electron charge density and static potential under a spherical complex optical potential formalism. The results show satisfactory agreement with available theoretical data, suggesting the need for further attempts to support the reported data in total electron scattering from liquid water.

Biao Jin et al.

Summary: This study directly observed the formation of ultra-small Au clusters in the presence of PAA-Na, which coalesce to form nanocrystals corresponding to the size of Au-13 cluster. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that gold has greater stability in an aqueous environment compared to other cluster sizes, providing atomistic details of growth by cluster coalescence.

Versatile Printing of Substantial Liquid Cells for Efficiently Imaging In Situ Liquid-Phase Dynamics

Zhiwen Liu et al.

Summary: Liquid-cell electron microscopy is essential for a wide range of applications, but statistical investigations have been challenging due to difficulties in fabricating substantial liquid cells efficiently. This study presents a versatile approach for efficiently printing a large number of ready-to-use liquid cells, allowing for statistical research in liquid-phase dynamics. The researchers were able to observe complete bubble evolution and nanoparticle motion, concluding that the bubble-driven nanoparticle motion is similar to ballistic behavior and not related to morphological asymmetries.

Detection of Pb2+ traces in dispersion of Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals by in situ liquid cell transmission electron microscopy

Zhiya Dang et al.

Summary: Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals are commonly used for the synthesis of CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals. In this study, liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (LCTEM) was used to observe spontaneous nucleation and growth of nanoparticles, mainly containing Pb, under electron beam illumination in a toluene solution. The identification of residual precursors in Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystal samples is important to understand and control the reactivity of the nanocrystals in subsequent reactions.
