Rational design of cobalt catalysts embedded in N-Doped carbon for the alcohol dehydrogenation to carboxylic acids

Cheng Chen et al.

Summary: A series of Co catalysts (Co@NC) were developed from the thermal treatment of ZIF-67, and Co@NC700-H2/Ar showed the best performance in the acceptorless alcohol dehydrogenation to carboxylic acids, enabling the synthesis of various aromatic and aliphatic carboxylic acids in moderate to high yields. The optimal pyrolysis conditions were found to result in ideal porosity and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), while the Co-N species played a crucial role in the catalysis.

Chuangwei Jiao et al.

Summary: The rapid development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has led to their applications in catalysis, adsorption, separation/purification, and energy storage. However, there is a need for new re-engineering options to enhance their functions. In this study, we demonstrate a simple and effective strategy to tune MOFs into hollow nanostructures using halide anions. The resulting derivatives show improved hydrogen evolution reaction activity and long-term electrochemical stability compared to the pristine MOFs.

Summary: Electrocatalysis is essential for renewable energy conversion and fuel production in future energy systems. Various nanostructures have been explored to enhance electrocatalytic activity, but ensuring long-term stability of electrocatalysts is crucial for reliable energy device operation. The challenge lies in achieving both high activity and robust stability simultaneously, as the structure-property relationships affecting activity and stability differ. Introducing functional structural units into catalyst design is essential to achieve electrochemical stability while maintaining high activity.
