Determination of sp2 and sp3 phase fractions on the surface of diamond films from C1s, valence band X-ray photoelectron spectra and CKVV X-ray-excited Auger spectra

A. T. Kozakov et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the method of determining the relative contents of carbon atoms in sp(2) and sp(3) states using C1s X-ray photoelectron and CKVV spectra, as well as the difficulties associated with this approach. A new method for evaluating the fractions of sp(2) and sp(3) phases was proposed, and differences in analyzing the surface characteristics of ultrananocrystalline and microcrystalline diamond films were compared.

Catalytic graphitization of single-crystal diamond

Semir Tulic et al.

Summary: The study utilizes aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and electrical transport measurements to investigate the structural changes during nickel-catalyzed graphitization of diamond, revealing competing atomistic processes and etching mechanisms influenced by different diamond surface orientations. This research sheds light on the synthesis of graphene-on-diamond heterostructures by clarifying the etching mechanisms and the impact of diamond surface terminations.

Graphitization of synthetic diamond crystals: A morphological study

Boris B. Bokhonov et al.

Summary: In the study, the morphological and structural evolution of synthetic diamond microcrystals of cuboctahedral shape during vacuum annealing at 1600°C was investigated. Graphitization was found to start from the vertices and edges of the crystals, with {111} facets being more prone to this process than {100} facets. Annealing in air helped reveal the orientation relationship of the graphite platelets forming from partially graphitized diamond microcrystals. The final graphite structures retained the shape of the initial diamond crystals.

Nitrogen terminated diamond (111) by RF(N2) plasma - chemical states, thermal stability and structural properties

Mohammed Attrash et al.

Summary: Nitrogen-terminated diamond (111) (N-diamond) is believed to have benefits to near-surface negative nitrogen vacancy (NV-) centers. Different levels of near-surface damage can be achieved by exposing diamond (111) to radio frequency nitrogen plasma under different conditions. The thermal stability and nitrogen incorporation on the N-diamond (111) surface were evaluated in this study, showing differences in comparison with diamond (100) under similar exposure conditions.

Mixed sp2-sp3 Nanocarbon Materials: A Status Quo Review

Jana Vejpravova

Summary: The review discusses the unique properties and application potential of carbon nanomaterials, including the interaction and transformation between different carbon networks, as well as the emergence of novel structures and potential applications in the sp(2)-sp(3) nanocarbon hybrid systems. Further exploration of the two-way sp(2) to sp(3) transformations at the nanoscale is also highlighted for innovative fabrication and chemical reactivity assessment.
