Controlling Aggregation-Induced Emission in Bimetallic Gold-Copper Nanoclusters via Surface Motif Engineering

Sikta Chakraborty et al.

Summary: In this study, bimetallic AuCu nanoclusters were synthesized and their aggregation-induced emission (AIE) was investigated. The emission band of Au NCs showed a significant blue shift with changes in the Au/Cu molar ratio, and a significant enhancement in emission intensity was observed at lower temperatures. Aggregation of the ultrasmall-sized AuCu NCs in a less polar medium resulted in a 200-fold increase in emission intensity. Metal cluster-based AIE-type materials offer a promising approach for designing highly luminescent materials for various applications.

Doping-Mediated Energy-Level Engineering of M@Au12 Superatoms (M=Pd, Pt, Rh, Ir) for Efficient Photoluminescence and Photocatalysis

Haru Hirai et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of MAu12(dppe)(5)Cl-2 compounds with icosahedral structures were synthesized and their electronic structures, photoluminescence, and photocatalytic properties were systematically investigated. Doping an M element at the lower left of the periodic table expanded the energy gap between HOMO and LUMO, resulting in enhanced photoluminescence quantum yield. MAu12 (M=Pt, Rh, or Ir) exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than Au-13.

Role of Ligand on Photophysical Properties of Nanoclusters with fcc Kernel: A Case Study of Ag14(SC6H4X)12(PPh3)8 (X = F, Cl, Br)

Anish Kumar Das et al.

Summary: The structure-property correlation of a series of silver nanoclusters reveals a strong relationship between the optical and electrochemical bandgap values and the electronic effect of halides, governed by intracluster and intercluster pi-pi interactions. Emission from these clusters at room temperature is predominantly due to interband relaxation of the Ag cores, with femtosecond transient absorption spectra showing decay profiles dominated by relaxation to surface states. This sheds light on the molecular-like dynamics of these nanoclusters with a face-centered cubic core.

Origins of Visible and Near-Infrared Emissions in [Au25(SR)18]- Nanoclusters

Meng Zhou et al.

Summary: A model that can explain the emission bands of Au-25 nanoclusters was proposed based on time-resolved emission and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy analyses. The visible and near-infrared emissions were found to arise from the core-shell charge transfer state and the Au-13 core state, respectively. This insight will aid in understanding how the excited state deactivates and in further engineering the photoluminescence of metal nanoclusters.

The Critical Number of Gold Atoms for a Metallic State Nanocluster: Resolving a Decades-Long Question

Meng Zhou et al.

Summary: Determining the transition from metallic to molecular state in gold nanoclusters is important for understanding surface plasmon resonance and metallic bond. Various criteria such as E-g, absorption spectra, and electron dynamics are used to differentiate metallic from molecular states, emphasizing the need for multiple analyses and cross-checking. These criteria deepen understanding of metal nanoclusters and aid in designing functional nanomaterials.

Effect of single electrons on the excited state dynamics of rod-shaped Au25 nanoclusters

Jie Kong et al.

Summary: The excited state dynamics of Au-25 nanoclusters are influenced by the addition of single electrons, with different decay lifetimes observed for different charge states. The presence of a single electron results in an additional decay process, and the charge state significantly affects the initial dipole moment orientation. These findings are important for understanding the role of charge state on the optical properties of metal nanoclusters.

Self-assembly of copper nanoclusters: isomeric ligand effect on morphological evolution

Sarita Kolay et al.

Summary: The hierarchical self-assembly of metal nanoclusters is influenced by the positional isomerism of the surface capping ligand, leading to morphological evolution from rods to platelets to ribbon-like structures. The excited-state relaxation dynamics of the assembled structures are correlated with their compactness and the degree of bonding interactions present.

Summary: A series of face-centered cubic-based silver nanoclusters were studied by varying the halogen atom in the thiolate ligand to investigate the influence of halide atoms on the electronic structure. These clusters are emissive at room temperature, with luminescence intensity increasing as temperature decreases, predominantly originating from interband relaxation of the silver cores.
