Light Amplification Materials Based on Biopolymers Doped with Dye Molecules.Structural Insights from 15N and 13C Solid-State Dynamic Nuclear Polarization

Mark Hoefler et al.

Summary: The study investigates the structure of dye-doped biopolymer-based materials using C-13 and N-15 solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance combined with dynamic nuclear polarization. By comparing substrates made from cellulose and chitosan, differences in interactions with the dye molecule Calcofluor White are observed, likely induced by structural changes due to hydrogen bonding with water. These structural differences may explain the variations in emission wavelength of Calcofluor White in ASE experiments on these substrates.

Reducing Unspecific Protein Adsorption in Microfluidic Papers Using Fiber-Attached Polymer Hydrogels

Alexander Ritter Von Stockert et al.

Summary: Microfluidic paper combines low-cost pump-free water transport with high sustainability, making it an attractive candidate for point-of-care analytics and diagnostics. However, the nonspecific adsorption of protein analytes to paper fibers during lateral flow assay limits the overall sensitivity of microfluidic paper-based analytical devices. By modifying fibers in lab-made paper sheets and evaporating transport fluid through local heating, the nonspecific protein adsorption can be significantly reduced, leading to improved signal-to-noise ratio in paper-based lateral flow assays.

19F MAS DNP for Probing Molecules in Nanomolar Concentrations: Direct Polarization as Key for Solid-State NMR Spectra without Solvent and Matrix Signals

Kasper P. van der Zwan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the efficiency of dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) enhanced F-19 MAS NMR spectroscopy for detecting fluorinated target molecules without F-19-containing solvents and matrices via F-19-F-19 spin diffusion. Direct polarization transfer over distances up to at least 20 A can achieve substantial enhancements, enabling spatial spectral editing in crowded spectra. The technique of exciting F-19 via DNP and transferring polarization to other heteronuclei within close proximity is expected to become more important in the future for NMR spectroscopy.

Advanced characterization of regioselectively substituted methylcellulose model compounds by DNP enhanced solid-state NMR spectroscopy

Pierrick Berruyer et al.

Summary: The Dynamic Nuclear Polarization MAS NMR technique was introduced to characterize model methylcellulose ether compounds at natural isotopic abundance. Through natural abundance 13C-13C correlation experiments, the position of the methyl ether group within the repeating unit was determined, while through space connectivity was explored to identify the substitution site on the cellulose ether.
