Cascaded electron transition proved by femto-second transient absorption spectroscopy for enhanced photocatalysis hydrogen generation

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: Regulating flow direction of photo-excited electrons from interior to active sites in surface is critical to enhance the photocatalytic performance. In this study, CdS and NiS nanodots were sequentially deposited onto g-C3N4 nanosheets using the photoinduced chemical reduction process. The resulting NiS/CdS/g-C3N4 hybrid composite showed significantly enhanced activity under visible light, and achieved a hydrogen evolution rate 2.4 times higher than that of g-C3N4. The enhanced activity was attributed to the favorable band overlapping and promoting charge separation, rather than increasing light absorption. Femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy (fs-TAS) revealed that the photo-excited electrons originated from g-C3N4, migrated unidirectionally to CdS, and finally reached NiS, which was facilitated by the precise regulation of CdS and NiS positions on g-C3N4 surface. This study provides insights into the electron transfer kinetics and processes in multi-component systems and offers a new avenue for the construction of stable photocatalysts with high activity.

Investigation of Concerted Proton-Electron Donors for Promoting the Selective Production of HCOOH in CO2 Photoreduction

Qiaohong Zhu et al.

Summary: Achieving carbon neutralization by CO2 photoreduction (CO2PR) has attracted extensive attention, but limited selectivity and harsh reaction conditions hinder its practical application. In this study, the authors introduced ammonia borane (AB) as mild proton-electron pair donors to realize synergistic hydrogen evolution and selective photocatalytic CO2 reduction to formic acid. Promising results were obtained, and the use of AB as a *H donor showed potential in accelerating the selective generation of formic acid. Furthermore, other similar *H donors also exhibited good performance, providing guidance for the design of high-performance CO2PR systems in the future.

Chlorine anion stabilized Cu2O/ZnO photocathode for selective CO2 reduction to CH4

Si -Tong Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, a chlorine (Cl)-modified Cu2O/ZnO heterostructure photocathode (CCZO) with high CH4 faradaic efficiency (88.6%) and durability (over 5 h) is presented. The Cl ions in CCZO stabilize Cu2O against photo-corrosion and promote the hydrogenation of *CO intermediate, leading to the selective reduction of CO2 to CH4. The catalytic mechanism of CCZO in modulating the energy barrier of intermediate *CO combined with H+ is elucidated, providing a new idea for developing high selectivity and stable catalysts for CO2 reduction.

Ting Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel carbon dot catalyst CD-COOFeIII was developed, which can efficiently generate hydroxyl radicals with an activity 105 times higher than the Fe3+/H2O2 system. Real-time infrared spectroscopy and kinetic isotope effects measurement revealed the importance of high electron-transfer rate constants of CD defects and their self-regulated proton-transfer behavior. The CD-COOFeIII/H2O2 system showed at least 51 times higher efficiency in antibiotics removal compared to the Fe3+/H2O2 system under equivalent conditions.

Summary: Constructing delicate nano-/microreactors with tandem active sites in hierarchical architectures is a promising strategy for designing efficient photocatalysts for CO2 reduction. In this study, hollow multi-shelled structure microreactors with spatial ordered hetero-shells were fabricated to achieve two-step CO2-to-CH4 photoreduction. The multiple inner CeO2 shells increased the number of active catalytic sites for efficient CO generation, while the adjacent outer-most shell induced the CO-to-CH4 reaction using amorphous TiO2 (A-TiO2) composites.
