Boosting solid oxide electrolyzer performance by fine tuning the microstructure of electrodes - Preliminary study

Jakub Kupecki et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the concept of improving the performance of solid oxide electrolyzers by adjusting the microstructure of the support materials. Instead of major redesigns, this study proposes fine-tuning the microstructure to enhance cell performance. The results show that adjusting the sintering temperature has a greater impact on the support microstructure than increasing the pore-forming agent.

Effects of pore former type on mechanical and electrochemical performance of anode support microtubes in solid oxide fuel cells

Timurkutluk Cigdem et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of pore formers added into the extrusion slurry of anode support microtubes on their mechanical and electrochemical performance. Experimental results show that the flexural strength of the microtubes decreases with increasing particle size and pore former content. Electrochemical tests indicate that the cell performance is mainly limited by diffusion polarization. The highest cell performance is achieved with a certain pore former content of graphite (325 mesh) for all temperatures and hydrogen flowrates tested. Optimization studies suggest that further improvement in cell performance can be achieved by increasing the pore former content.

An adaptive thermo-mechanical peridynamic model for crack analysis in anode-supported solid oxide fuel cell

Yu Xiang et al.

Summary: This study reconstructs the 3D real microstructures of various porous Ni-YSZ anodes using the FIB-SEM technique and proposes a PD model to predict the mechanical damages of different anodes under severe conditions. The equivalent mechanical and thermal properties of the composite anodes are analyzed and correlated to the real microstructures. The research provides a trans-scale model for simulating the generation and propagation of cracks, and shows great potential in supporting the optimization of SOFCs at a trans-scale level.

Effect of total pressure difference on counter transport of gases with different molecular weights through solid oxide fuel cell anode

Kento Sengoku et al.

Summary: The study investigates counter transport of gases with different molecular weights in a hydrogen-steam binary mixture in a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). It is found that a total pressure difference is required to enhance the transport of gas with a larger molecular weight. The developed numerical model accurately reproduces experimental results and predicts the limiting current density of an SOFC.

Integrated thermal reforming and electro-oxidation in ammonia-fueled tubular solid oxide fuel cells toward autothermal operation

Nattikarn Jantakananuruk et al.

Summary: Ammonia has been applied as a high-energy-density liquid and carbon-free hydrogen carrier in high-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). This study investigates the spatially resolved thermal and concentration effects of ammonia decomposition and hydrogen oxidation reactions in an intensified tubular SOFC (t-SOFC) fueled directly with ammonia. The experimental results show that efficient heat integration can be achieved in an ammonia-fueled t-SOFC operated at a temperature of 700 degrees C and below, and it exhibits stability and durability during a 150-hour performance test.
