Effect of the Substrate on MoS2 Monolayer Morphology: An Integrated Computational and Experimental Study

Shiddartha Paul et al.

Summary: Controlling the lattice orientation of two-dimensional materials is a major challenge for their industrial applications. This study investigates the role of substrate crystallinity in the growth orientation of 2D materials and provides insights for the high-quality synthesis of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) for high-performance electronic and optoelectronic devices.

A computational framework for guiding the MOCVD-growth of wafer-scale 2D materials

Kasra Momeni et al.

Summary: This study developed a multiscale computational framework called the CPM model for precise control over the growth of two-dimensional materials. Experimental verification confirmed the reliability of this computational approach. The results showed that the computational method can guide the synthesis of large-area uniform two-dimensional materials via Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD), providing critical capabilities for fabricating electronic, optoelectronic, and quantum computing devices.

Elucidation of Molybdenum Trioxide Sulfurization: Mechanistic Insights into Two-Dimensional Molybdenum Disulfide Growth

Thierry Tsafack et al.

Summary: This study utilizes molecular dynamics simulations and ab initio calculations to elucidate the reaction pathway of sulfur with molybdenum trioxide. The research shows that molybdenum trioxide can catalyze the decomposition of larger sulfur allotropes, and the temperature dependence analysis indicates that the maximum reaction rates occur between 1000 and 1100 K, which is consistent with experimental growth temperatures for molybdenum disulfide.

Atomistic-Scale Simulations on Graphene Bending Near a Copper Surface

Malgorzata Kowalik et al.

Summary: Molecular insights into graphene-catalyst surface interactions can provide useful information for designing copper current collectors with graphitic anode interfaces. ReaxFF reactive molecular simulations were used to investigate graphene bending in vacuum and near copper surfaces, showing the relevance of using recently developed parameter sets. Additionally, atomistic simulations validated the draping angle at copper step edges, in agreement with experimental measurements.

Development and Applications of ReaxFF Reactive Force Fields for Group-III Gas-Phase Precursors and Surface Reactions with Graphene in Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition Synthesis

Siavash Rajabpour et al.

Summary: By developing two reactive force fields, the gas-phase reactions and surface interactions in metal-organic chemical vapor deposition played a key role in the growth of Ga and In films. Optimizing the thermal decomposition conditions led to the preparation of low-impurity Ga/In nanoclusters, while the directional growth characteristics of Ga atoms on graphene were discovered.

Summary: The study introduces the first reactive force field (ReaxFF) for Mo/Se/H interactions, enabling large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of 2D-MoSe2. This potential elucidates characteristics such as structural transition, defect energetics, and vacancy migration, and a theoretical model based on it describes domain morphology evolution.

Illuminating Invisible Grain Boundaries in Coalesced Single-Orientation WS2 Monolayer Films

Danielle Reifsnyder Hickey et al.

Summary: The study investigates the crystal growth mechanisms and defect formation of WS2, revealing its microstructure and orientation characteristics through electron microscopy imaging and molecular dynamics simulations. It reveals the relationship between defects and grain boundaries, as well as the tilting of the film when released from the substrate. Statistical analysis reveals that microstructural features are constructed from nanometer-scale building blocks, describing the system across length scales from sub-Angstrom to multimicrometer.
