Direct Probe of Electrochemical Pseudocapacitive pH Jump at a Graphene Electrode

Yongkang Wang et al.

Summary: We used HD-SFG spectroscopy to directly probe the interfacial water at the graphene electrode supported on CaF2. The observed phase transition-like variations in the HD-SFG spectra were not due to the charging/discharging of graphene, but rather the CaF2 substrate through pseudocapacitive process. The potential-dependent spectra were similar to the pH-dependent spectra, indicating that the pseudocapacitive behavior was associated with a local pH change induced by water dissociation between CaF2 and graphene.

Ab Initio Simulations of Water/Metal Interfaces

Axel Gross et al.

Summary: Structures and processes at water/metal interfaces are crucial for electrochemical energy conversion and storage, photoconversion, sensors, and corrosion. They also provide a model system for studying solid-liquid interfaces, combining concepts from chemistry and physics. The interactions between water-water and water-metal are similar in strength, resulting in a competition for the structures at water/metal interfaces. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations are the preferred method for modeling these interfaces, but they require substantial computational resources.

Proton Configuration in Water Chain on Pt(533)

Naoki Nagatsuka et al.

Summary: In this paper, the wetting behavior of Pt(533) is studied using vibrational sum-frequency generation spectroscopy. The results show that water molecules on both the step and the terrace have a proton pointing down configuration. The growth manner of the signal and isotopic dilution experiments support a one-dimensional chain with a zigzag structure.

Disentangling Sum-Frequency Generation Spectra of the Water Bending Mode at Charged Aqueous Interfaces

Takakazu Seki et al.

Summary: The origin of the SFG signal of the water bending mode has been debated, with findings suggesting that it can serve as a suitable probe for the structure of interfacial water. By analyzing the bending mode response with systematic variations in salt concentration, researchers were able to differentiate the responses of water in the Stern and diffuse layers, confirming the dipolar nature of the response and the presence of interfacial hydrogen bonding.

Progress in phase-sensitive sum frequency generation spectroscopy

Shoichi Yamaguchi et al.

Summary: Sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy is a powerful tool for studying surfaces and interfaces, while phase-sensitive SFG (PS-SFG) is an upgraded technique that overcomes inherent drawbacks of conventional SFG. Significant progress has been made in the design and construction of PS-SFG methods, which have addressed some of the problems overlooked by traditional SFG.
