Capture of Gaseous Iodine in Isoreticular Zirconium-Based UiO-n Metal-Organic Frameworks: Influence of Amino Functionalization, DFT Calculations, Raman and EPR Spectroscopic Investigation

Maeva Leloire et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of amino-functionalization on Zr-based UiO-n MOF materials for iodine capture. Experimental results demonstrate the preferential interaction between amino functional groups and iodine, which is also supported by DFT calculations. UV-Vis and Raman spectroscopy analysis reveals the encapsulation of iodine within the pore system of UiO-n materials and their amino-derivatives. Moreover, molecular iodine (I-2) species are converted into anionic iodine complexes within the MOF cavities when exposed to ambient light.

Iodine Uptake by Zr-/Hf-Based UiO-66 Materials: The Influence of Metal Substitution on Iodine Evolution

Pedro H. M. Andrade et al.

Summary: This study reports the transformation of iodine encased in metal-organic frameworks and the influence of Hf on the structure and physical properties of UiO-66. The presence of Hf reduces the band gap of UiO-66 and leads to changes in certain physical properties. The study also confirms the advantage of Hf in capturing iodine and proposes a mechanism for the conversion of I2 into I3-.

Power of Infrared and Raman Spectroscopies to Characterize Metal-Organic Frameworks and Investigate Their Interaction with Guest Molecules

Konstantin Hadjiivanov et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with various functionalities and porous structures are suitable for a wide range of applications. Vibrational spectroscopy (IR and Raman) plays a crucial role in characterizing MOF materials and studying their interaction with gases, highlighting both advantages and limitations of the technique. By combining IR and Raman spectroscopies with other techniques, the structure, properties, and reactivity of MOFs can be explicitly established.

Interplay between Intrinsic Thermal Stability and Expansion Properties of Functionalized UiO-67 Metal-Organic Frameworks

Isabella Goodenough et al.

Summary: The UiO-67 MOFs exhibit negative thermal expansion behavior and high thermal stability. Activated UiO-67 samples show higher thermal stability in the absence of oxygen compared to ambient or inert environments. Two stages of change are observed during thermal treatment, related to the structure and isotropic thermal expansion behavior of the materials.

Effect of Functional Groups on the I2 Sorption Kinetics of Isostructural Metal-Organic Frameworks

Byeongchan Lee et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of functional groups on I-2 sorption kinetics using two types of isostructural metal-organic frameworks. UiO-66-(COOH)2 showed the fastest sorption kinetics and highest sorption capacity, while M-2(m-DOBDC) displayed faster chemisorption due to electrophilic aromatic substitution. The mechanisms of I-2 sorption were further supported by fitting the data to pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models.

Exploring the Role of Cluster Formation in UiO Family Hf Metal-Organic Frameworks with in Situ X-ray Pair Distribution Function Analysis

Francesca C. N. Firth et al.

Summary: The structures of Zr and Hf metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are sensitive to small changes in synthetic conditions, with the choice of solvent and reaction temperature determining the cluster identity and hence the MOF structure. The nature of Hf metal clusters in different reaction solutions can be tracked during UiO MOF synthesis, leading to insights on the formation mechanism and potential for designing new MOF structures.
