Porosimetry of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy

J. Mor et al.

Summary: Due to its crystalline morphology, Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIFs) have well designed pore architecture, high surface area, pore volume, and well defined pore network, making them great candidates for gas separation, gas storage, catalysis, and sensors. However, traditional gas adsorption techniques are insufficient for studying the complete pore architecture of ZIFs. Recently, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) has been identified as a powerful technique for investigating the pore architecture of various ZIFs.

Flexibility of Mixed Ligand Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIF-7-8) under CO2 Pressure: An Investigation Using Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy

Jaideep Mor et al.

Summary: Fine tuning the pore architecture and flexibility of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) is crucial for their applications in gas separation. This study investigates the tuning of pore architecture and flexibility of ZIF-7-8 frameworks with different benzimidazole (bIm) contents using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) measurements under CO2 pressure. The results show that the frameworks' aperture and cavity open up with increasing bIm content but decrease at higher content. Flexibility, measured using PALS under CO2 pressure, initially decreases and then increases. The study reveals that frameworks with larger apertures are less flexible due to the open configurations of ligands in the lattice, while frameworks with smaller apertures exhibit higher flexibility due to ligand twisting under CO2 pressure. The pore-opening phenomenon induced by lattice flexibility under CO2 pressure is reversible for ZIF-7-8.

Interlocking dendritic fibrous nanosilica into microgranules by polyethylenimine assisted assembly: in situ neutron diffraction and CO2 capture studies

Jitendra Bahadur et al.

Summary: In this work, dendritic fibrous nano-silica (DFNS)-polyethylenimine (PEI) microgranules were successfully synthesized via an evaporation induced assembly approach. The incorporation of PEI in the DFNS microgranules led to disordered jamming and the formation of voids, increasing the accessibility of the internal pores. The unique morphology and strong PEI confinement of the DFNS microgranules resulted in excellent CO2 adsorption characteristics and good regeneration capability.

CO2 capture performance and mechanism of blended amine solvents regulated by N-methylcyclohexyamine

Rujie Wang et al.

Summary: Blended amine solvents, comprising N,N-dimethylcyclohexylamine (DMCA) and N-methylcyclohexyamine (MCA), showed rapid absorption rate, large CO2 capacity, and efficient regeneration for CO2 capture. The total mass transfer coefficient of CO2 in DMCA-MCA was higher than that of 5 M MEA, and the total regeneration energy of DMCA-MCA blend was significantly lower than 5 M MEA. This novel solvent could be a potential alternative for CO2 capture.

Effect of the Surface Polarity, Through Employing Nonpolar Spacer Groups, on the Glass-Transition Dynamics of Poly(phenyl methylsiloxane) Confined in Alumina Nanopores

Roksana Winkler et al.

Summary: The study showed that changes in surface conditions affect the dynamics of poly(phenylmethylsiloxane) in alumina nanopores. By adjusting the ratio of polar units and nonpolar spacers, surface polarity can be controlled, influencing the growth of adsorbed layers and additional interlayers. Additionally, surface polarity changes impact equilibration kinetics and can control the time scale of structural recovery towards equilibrium.

Localized and Collective Dynamics in Liquid-like Polyethylenimine-Based Nanoparticle Organic Hybrid Materials

Emmanuel Urandu Mapesa et al.

Summary: Broadband dielectric spectroscopy, rheology, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy were used to study molecular dynamics in a nanoparticle organic hybrid material (NOHMs) system with 20 wt % silica nanoparticles ionically bonded to a polyethylenimine canopy. The timescales characterizing segmental dynamics in the NOHM were found to be the same as those for the neat polymer canopy. Detailed analysis of carbon-spin lattice relaxation times provided mechanistic insights into localized and collective dynamics, in agreement with dielectric results. The NOHMs exhibited liquid-like characteristics but had higher viscosity due to contributions from tethered polymer chains and mesoscopic structuring.
