Influence of the environment on the infrared spectrum of alanine: An effective mode analysis

Jessica Bowles et al.

Summary: The vibrational spectrum of alanine amino acid was computationally determined in different environments and phases using molecular dynamics trajectories and an optimized polarizable force field. The analysis revealed significant differences between the spectra of neutral and zwitterionic forms of alanine in the gas phase, and provided insights into the molecular origins of vibrational bands in condensed phases.

De novo determination of near-surface electrostatic potentials by NMR

Binhan Yu et al.

Summary: The study presents a novel NMR-based method for validating electrostatic potentials around biomolecules, demonstrating good agreement with predictions from the Poisson-Boltzmann theory. However, certain weaknesses of the theory were also illuminated, such as discrepancies in the dependence on ionic strength and potential errors due to conformational flexibility or structural uncertainties. This NMR-based method has the potential to facilitate improvements in computational approaches for electrostatic potentials.
