2D-IR spectroscopy of proteins in H2O-A Perspective

Samantha H. H. Rutherford et al.

Summary: The form of the amide I infrared absorption band is a sensitive probe for studying proteins in solution. Recent advancements in ultrafast 2D-IR spectroscopy have allowed the detection of the protein amide I band in H2O-based fluids, enabling the study of proteins in physiologically relevant solvents. This development has the potential to impact protein structural dynamics, analytical and biomedical sciences, and the creation of 2D-IR spectral libraries for high-throughput protein screening and disease diagnosis.

Is Unified Understanding of Vibrational Coupling of Water Possible? Hyper-Raman Measurement and Machine Learning Spectra

Kazuki Inoue et al.

Summary: The impact of vibrational coupling on water spectra is studied using hyper-Raman (HR) spectroscopy and machine learning. Isotopic dilution reduces the HR bandwidth, but the coupling effect is smaller compared to IR and Raman spectra. Machine learning HR spectra reveal that intermolecular coupling plays a major role in broadening the bandwidth, while intramolecular coupling has negligible impact, consistent with IR and Raman spectra. This study demonstrates the limited effect of intramolecular vibrations, independent of selection rules in vibrational spectroscopy.

Electronic and mechanical anharmonicities in the vibrational spectra of the H-bonded, cryogenically cooled X- • HOCl (X=Cl, Br, I) complexes: Characterization of the strong anionic H-bond to an acidic OH group

Santino J. Stropoli et al.

Summary: In this study, the vibrational spectra of H2-tagged, cryogenically cooled X- center dot HOCl (X = Cl, Br, and I) ion-molecule complexes were investigated using electronic structure calculations and an anharmonic theoretical treatment. The results showed the presence of additional bands in the band patterns, similar to X- center dot HOD analogs, indicating excitations of nominally IR forbidden overtones and combination bands.

Ultrafast vibrational dynamics of the free OD at the air/water interface: Negligible isotopic dilution effect but large isotope substitution effect

Mohammed Ahmed et al.

Summary: In this study, the vibrational relaxation dynamics of free OD molecules at the air/D2O interface were investigated using ultrafast spectroscopy. The results showed that the vibrational relaxation time of free OD molecules did not exhibit any isotopic dilution effect, similar to the behavior of free OH molecules. The relaxation of excited free OD molecules was found to predominantly occur through reorientation, rather than intramolecular energy transfer. The significantly longer relaxation time of free OD compared to free OH suggests the presence of a nuclear quantum effect on the diffusive reorientation of OD molecules. This study provides important insights into the vibrational relaxation behavior of water molecules at interfaces.

Spontaneous versus Stimulated Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering of Liquid Water

Paulina Filipczak et al.

Summary: In this study, we observed the surface-enhanced signal of water in an aqueous dispersion of silver nanoparticles in spontaneous and femtosecond stimulated Raman processes with different Raman pump wavelengths. Calculating enhancement factors and testing the role of plasmon resonance and Raman resonance conditions showed their effects on signal amplification.
