Imaging the Atomistic Dynamics of Single Proton Transfer and Combined Hydrogen/Proton Transfer in the O-+CH3I Reaction

Arnab Khan et al.

Summary: In this study, we report on reactive scattering studies of proton transfer and combined hydrogen/proton transfer in the O- + CH3I reaction. State-of-the-art experimental techniques and quantum chemistry calculations were used to understand the dynamics of product formations. The results show that the product ions are predominantly forward scattered and the combined hydrogen/proton transfer channel exhibits lower product velocities compared to single proton transfer.

Suppression of low product kinetic energies in reactions of FHO- and Cl-(H2O)with CH3I

Bjoern Bastian et al.

Summary: Crossed beam imaging experiments revealed substantially different reaction dynamics, product branching ratios, and time scales for the nucleophilic substitution reactions of Cl-(H2O) and F-(H2O) with CH3I at low collision energy, with a suppression of low product kinetic energies observed in both reactions. These results provide a more detailed understanding of the dynamics of hydrated nucleophilic substitution reactions at low collision energy.

Orbiting resonances in formaldehyde reveal coupling of roaming, radical, and molecular channels

Casey D. Foley et al.

Summary: This study provides evidence of quantum dynamics in the photodissociation of formaldehyde, demonstrating the modulation effect of the roaming pathway on complex vibrational dynamics and coupling among the three dissociation pathways in the excited molecule. Resonances associated with H+HCO(K-a = 1) have a significant impact on CO rotational and translational energy distributions, causing the roaming fraction to vary by a factor of 2 over an energy range of 10 cm(-1).

Fifty years of nucleophilic substitution in the gas phase

Roland Wester

Summary: Bimolecular nucleophilic substitution (S(N)2) reactions have become a model system for investigating structure-reactivity relationships, stereochemistry, solvent influences, and detailed atomistic dynamics. Progress in experimental and theoretical research on gas phase S(N)2 reactions over the past five decades has significantly advanced our understanding of these reactions' properties and dynamics.

Atomistic dynamics of elimination and nucleophilic substitution disentangled for the F- + CH3CH2Cl reaction

Jennifer Meyer et al.

Summary: The dynamics of the polyatomic reaction F- + CH3CH2Cl have been studied using ion-imaging experiments and quasi-classical trajectory simulations. The anti-E2 pathway is found to be most important, but the relevance of the S(N)2 pathway increases with collision energy, with the reaction being dominated by direct dynamics.
