Coordination and organometallic precursors of group 10 and 11: Focused electron beam induced deposition of metals and insight gained from chemical vapour deposition, atomic layer deposition, and fundamental surface and gas phase studies

I Utke et al.

Summary: Nanostructured materials made from group 10 and 11 elements have significant technological relevance. Focused electron beam induced deposition is the only technique capable of fabricating nanostructures with arbitrary shape and dimensions below 10 nm. However, the chemistry of this process is not well understood and requires further optimization.

Formation of clustered DNA damage in vivo upon irradiation with ionizing radiation: Visualization and analysis with atomic force microscopy

Toshiaki Nakano et al.

Summary: This study established a method to evaluate the yield and complexity of clustered DNA damage in irradiated cells using atomic force microscopy. It was found that clustered DNA damage is a signature of ionizing radiation, and Fe ion beams produce clustered DNA damage with high complexity.

Atomistic simulation of the FEBID-driven growth of iron-based nanostructures

Alexey Prosvetov et al.

Summary: This study investigates the growth of iron-containing nanostructures during focused electron beam-induced deposition (FEBID) using atomistic irradiation-driven molecular dynamics (IDMD) simulations. The simulations reveal that the morphology and elemental composition of the deposit vary significantly with increasing electron current. A low current leads to the formation of nanogranular structures with low metal content, while a higher current facilitates the coalescence of metal clusters into dendrite-like structures with higher metal content.

Comparative electron irradiations of amorphous and crystalline astrophysical ice analogues

Duncan Mifsud et al.

Summary: Laboratory studies have shown that the radiation chemistry in astrophysical ice depends on various experimental parameters, with the phase of the solid ice being a key factor. Results indicate that the strength of intermolecular forces in the ice plays a significant role in stabilizing the ice against radiation-induced decay.

Charged Particle-Induced Surface Reactions of Organometallic Complexes as a Guide to Precursor Design for Electron- and Ion-Induced Deposition of Nanostructures

Jo-Chi Yu et al.

Summary: FEBID and FIBID are direct-write fabrication techniques using focused beams of charged particles. Ultra high vacuum surface science studies provide mechanistic information on electron and ion-induced processes, aiding in the design of custom precursors for these techniques. Minimizing contamination in nanostructures is crucial for many applications.

Living up to its potential-Direct-write nanofabrication with focused electron beams

Michael Huth et al.

Summary: FEBID has traditionally been used as an auxiliary process in sample preparation for transmission electron microscopy, but has now become a leading technical approach in lithography mask repair and materials/device fabrication. Despite its rather exclusive user base, there is a hope to generate more interest and excitement in FEBID within the broader scientific community.

Calculated electron impact ionisation fragmentation patterns

Vincent Graves et al.

Summary: This passage discusses the measurements and calculations of total electron impact ionisation cross sections, as well as methods for deducing fragmentation patterns. Partial ionisation cross sections for different molecules were estimated using two methods, with mass spectroscopy method showing greater accuracy but Huber's computational method being a viable first approximation without experimental data. A hybrid method combining both approaches was also explored to address potential incomplete datasets from mass spectroscopy.

Water-Assisted Electron-Induced Chemistry of the Nanofabrication Precursor Iron Pentacarbonyl

Jozef Lengyel et al.

Summary: Focused electron beam deposition often requires the use of purification techniques to increase the metal content of the deposit. One promising method is adding H2O vapor during electron irradiation, which can either stabilize ligands against dissociation or enhance decomposition depending on the electron energy range. This study demonstrates the sensitivity of water action on Fe(CO)(5) decomposition and its dependency on hydration degree.

Irradiation-driven molecular dynamics simulation of the FEBID process for Pt(PF3)4

Alexey Prosvetov et al.

Summary: This paper presents a detailed computational protocol for atomistic simulation of the formation and growth of metal-containing nanostructures during FEBID, providing valuable insights into the fundamental mechanisms of electron-induced precursor fragmentation and nanostructure formation. The developed methodology is general and can be adjusted for different precursor molecules and nanofabrication techniques. Simulation results offer valuable reference data for experimental characterization of nanostructures grown by FEBID.

Summary: This article reviews experiments with molecules picked up on large clusters in molecular beams, focusing on processes in atmospheric and interstellar chemistry. It discusses the pickup process, uptake of atmospheric molecules on mixed nitric acid-water clusters, coagulation of adsorbed molecules, and reactions triggered by UV-photons or electrons. The selected examples demonstrate important parameters and reaction processes relevant to aerosol formation and negative ion reactions, providing insights for future research directions in atmospheric and interstellar chemistry.
