Summary: Loading phosphonate groups on the surface of Ru/La,Rh:STO photocatalyst enhances its photocatalytic activity during the hydrogen evolution reaction, with alkylsilane phosphonate surface modification proving more effective than using a phosphate-buffered electrolyte. In contrast, the incorporation of amine, sulfonate, and propyl groups does not improve the activity.

Oxidation processes at the surface of BaTiO3 thin films under environmental conditions

Irena Spasojevic et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the XPS analysis of ferroelectric BaTiO3 thin films to determine the relationship between surface chemistry, polarization direction, and stability. Changes were observed under environmental conditions, heating in O2, and irradiation in vacuum. The research identified two different oxidation states of O atoms in Ba compounds and demonstrated BaO2 as an important active species for studying screening mechanisms related to catalytic activity in the ferroelectric material.

Piezotronic-enhanced photocatalytic performance of heterostructured BaTiO3/SrTiO3 nanofibers

Xiaoting Liu et al.

Summary: The piezoelectric effect effectively enhances the photocatalytic performance of BaTiO3/SrTiO3 nanocomposites, with the nanofibers showing excellent degradation ability of pollutants in water under ultrasonic and UV irradiation. The built-in polarization field from the piezoelectric effect improves the separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers, while DFT calculations demonstrate a reduction in the band gap width of SrTiO3 due to the piezoelectric potential. This article suggests a promising strategy for enhancing the photocatalytic performance of nanocomposites through the use of mechanical energy.

Turbulence enhanced ferroelectric-nanocrystal-based photocatalysis in urchin-like TiO2/BaTiO3 microspheres for hydrogen evolution

Haidong Li et al.

Summary: A new hybrid photocatalyst combining ferroelectric nanocrystals and dendritic TiO2 was proposed for sonophotocatalysis, enhancing the photocatalytic activity and cyclic performance by utilizing the spontaneous polarization potential of BaTiO3 nanocrystals under periodic ultrasonic excitation. The significant enhancement of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution was attributed to the coupling effect of two types of piezoelectric potential and the semiconductor and optical properties of the hybrid structure under simulated sunlight and periodic ultrasonic irradiation, leading to improved efficiency of converting mechanical energy to chemical energy.
