Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for the Determination of Cancer Biomarkers

Greta Pilvenyte et al.

Summary: Biomarkers are crucial in providing information about cancer and other diseases. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have recently been used in analytical systems to detect cancer biomarkers, such as prostate cancer (PSA), breast cancer (CA15-3, HER-2), ovarian cancer (CA-125), hepatocellular carcinoma (AFP), and small molecule cancer biomarkers (5-HIAA and neopterin). The determination of low concentrations of these biomarkers in complex matrices is challenging, but MIP-based biosensors have been employed for assessment. This article provides an overview of the MIP-based sensor creation principles, analytical signal determination methods, and suitable materials for each biomarker through comparing and discussing the results of reviewed biosensors.

Fabrication of a novel electrochemical biosensor based on a molecular imprinted polymer-aptamer hybrid receptor for lysozyme determination

Tavoos Beiki et al.

Summary: In this study, a new, sensitive, and rapid electrochemical biosensor was used to detect lysozyme using a double receptor of molecular imprinted polymer (MIP)-aptamer. The sensor was prepared by modifying a glassy carbon electrode with a nanocomposite consisting of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs), and chitosan. The MWCNTs-N-CQDs-chitosan nanocomposite provided large amounts of carboxyl groups for binding to amino-functionalized aptamers, resulting in improved electrochemical signal and allowing lysozyme determination at low concentrations.

Summary: This research utilized molecular imprinting technology to create a glyphosate-sensitive layer for an electrochemical surface plasmon resonance (ESPR) sensor. The study revealed the restrictions and challenges encountered during the development of glyphosate ESPR sensor using molecularly imprinted polymer. It was found that glyphosate interfered with the deposition process of the polymer, but the problem was partially overcome by using a self-assembled monolayer before deposition. The dissociation constant and free energy of Gibbs values for the glyphosate-MIPpy interaction were calculated.
