Ultrasound-Assisted Wound (UAW) Debridement in the Treatment of Diabetic Foot Ulcer: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Sebastian Flores-Escobar et al.

Summary: Ultrasound-assisted wound debridement showed higher healing rates and a greater percentage of wound area reduction compared to placebo and standard care in patients with diabetic foot ulcers, with similar healing times observed between groups.

Success Rates of Debridement, Antibiotics, and Implant Retention in 230 Infected Total Knee Arthroplasties: Implications for Classification of Periprosthetic Joint Infection

Mark F. Zhu et al.

Summary: This study reviewed 230 patients treated with DAIR for primary total knee arthroplasty (TICS) PJIs and found an overall success rate of 53.9%. DAIR was more successful in early PJIs compared to late PJIs, and infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and gram-negative bacteria were risk factors for DAIR failure. The age of implant was identified as an important predictor of DAIR outcomes.

SAAP-148 Eradicates MRSA Persisters Within Mature Biofilm Models Simulating Prosthetic Joint Infection

Henk Scheper et al.

Summary: Prosthetic joint infection is a severe complication of arthroplasty, often caused by biofilm formation. Current treatment strategies are often ineffective, prompting the need for innovative anti-biofilm and anti-persister agents. A study developed an in vitro model for PJI using various surfaces exposed to antibiotics, with SAAP-148 showing high effectiveness against persister bacteria.

The impact of sonication cultures when the diagnosis of prosthetic joint infection is inconclusive

Taiana Cunha Ribeiro et al.

Summary: The study compared the sensitivity and specificity of sonication culture and tissue culture in diagnosing prosthetic joint infections (PJI), finding that sonication culture had higher sensitivity rates while tissue culture had better specificity. Combining both methods for diagnosis resulted in the highest sensitivity, indicating that sonication cultures can aid in PJI diagnosis, especially when traditional diagnostic criteria are inconclusive.

Summary: The study found that using only two statistical parameters extracted from the surface can effectively describe the anisotropy changes on complex morphological surfaces, providing a simple quantitative route for the characterization and design of surface textures in bio-oriented applications.

Outcome of Debridement, Antibiotics, and Implant Retention for Staphylococcal Hip and Knee Prosthetic Joint Infections, Focused on Rifampicin Use: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

H. Scheper et al.

Summary: The use of rifampicin in the treatment of staphylococcal prosthetic joint infections may only prevent a small fraction of treatment failures, with varying success rates for different strains of Staphylococcus in PJI.

Modular component exchange and outcome of DAIR for hip and knee periprosthetic joint infection A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW AND META-REGRESSION ANALYSIS

M. Gerritsen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between exchange of modular parts in debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR) procedure and outcomes for hip and knee periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) through a meta-analysis. The results showed that modular component exchange did not have a significant benefit in reducing PJI failure. Furthermore, the association between modular component exchange and outcome changed after 2004.

Summary: The study assessed the risk and timing of DAIR procedures after primary hip and knee arthroplasty, finding no significant difference in the 1-year re-revision rate for total hip and knee arthroplasty based on Dutch registry data.
