Boron-tethered oxidopyrylium-based [5+2] cycloadditions

Seth I. Corrie et al.

Summary: Oxidopyrylium-based [5 + 2] cycloadditions between diethanolamine appended silyloxypyrones and organoboronic acid derivatives were successfully achieved. Evidence of the diethanolamine boronate (DABO) complex was observed with boronic acids at room temperature using 1H NMR, and the [5 + 2] cycloaddition was carried out in a single reaction mixture in DCE. Pinacol boronates required elevated temperature and afforded products that were not easily accessible with boronic acids. Theoretical calculations support an asynchronous concerted transition state. The reaction exhibited good functional group tolerance, and the products were isolated as oxabicyclo[3.2.1]-octane DABO cycloadducts.

Evolution of the Diels-Alder Reaction Mechanism since the 1930s: Woodward, Houk with Woodward, and the Influence of Computational Chemistry on Understanding Cycloadditions

Kendall N. Houk et al.

Summary: This review article traces the evolution of Woodward's mechanistic thinking from proposing a charge-transfer mechanism to developing the Woodward-Katz two-stage concerted mechanism and orbital symmetry control. Research by Houk in Woodward's lab tested the theory's predictions. Modern calculations have confirmed Woodward's descriptions of cyclopentadiene dimerization mechanism and the discovery of ambimodal or bis-pericyclic transition states. Hoffmann's Coda reflects on the joy of following the cycloaddition story from Woodward's youth to trajectory simulations today.

Energy of Concert and Origins of Regioselectivity for 1,3-Dipolar Cycloadditions of Diazomethane

Shuming Chen et al.

Summary: Mechanisms and regioselectivities in 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions of diazomethane with alkenes were investigated using density functional theory and DLPNO-CCSD(T) computations. The results showed that the concerted but asynchronous pathway is favored over the stepwise diradical pathway, with specific interactions and frontier coefficients determining regioselectivity in reactions involving different types of alkenes.

Comparison of (5+2) Cycloadditions Involving Oxidopyrylium and Oxidopyridinium Ions: Relative Reactivities

Yining Lu et al.

Summary: This study compares the effects of nitrogen-for-oxygen substitution on reactivity in various (5 + 2) cycloaddition reactions involving oxidopyridinium and oxidopyrylium zwitterions. It is predicted that activation barriers for nitrogen-containing systems are larger than those for oxygen-containing systems. The research suggests that reactivity is more dependent on distortion effects, such as aromaticity loss, than on interaction effects.
