1,2,3-Triazole with linear and branched catenated nitrogen chains - The role of regiochemistry in energetic materials

Qi Lai et al.

Summary: Two energetic molecules with different linear and branched N8 structures were synthesized, showing a significant difference in decomposition temperatures despite having the same chemical formula and azo functionality. Analysis based on single crystal X-ray diffraction and theoretical investigations revealed that regional heterogeneity causing difference in charge distribution is the main factor contributing to the varying stabilities of these molecules.

C5H2N14O6: achieving azido-based materials with zero oxygen balance and good energetic performance

Qing Lang et al.

Summary: A new azido-based compound 4, N,N'-methylenebis(N-(4-azido-1,2,5-oxadiazol-3-yl)nitramide), was synthesized and characterized, with a compact face-to-face and wavelike stacking crystal structure. The introduction of nitro groups resulted in compound 4 having a zero oxygen balance based on carbon monoxide, which is unusual for azido-based materials. The excellent crystal arrangement and oxygen balance provided compound 4 with better detonation performance (D: 9018 m s(-1); P: 34.5 GPa), indicating its potential application as a high-energy-density material.

Tricyclic nitrogen-rich explosives with a planar backbone: bis(1,2,4-triazolyl)-1,2,3-triazoles as potential stable green gas generants

Hao Gu et al.

Summary: Two tricyclic nitrogen-rich compounds were synthesized, leading to metal-free energetic salts with positive heat of formation and good thermal stability. These salts exhibit high detonation velocities comparable to RDX, along with low sensitivities to mechanical stimulations. Additionally, the evaluation of gas production capacities showed high gas production volume and pressure compared to commonly used gas generants.
