Growth kinetics of second phase particles in N36 zirconium alloy: Zr-Sn-Nb-Fe

A. W. Aldeen et al.

Summary: Analyzing the diffusion kinetics behavior is important for understanding the properties of Zr alloy materials. This study experimentally calculates the coarsening growth kinetics of precipitates in N36 zirconium alloy and investigates the morphology of second phase particles (SPPs). The results show that the SPPs lose their fine and linear distribution properties as the temperature or aging period increases, and the large particles grow following the Ostwald ripening property. Most SPPs are identified as Zr(Nb, Fe)2. The activation energy of the precipitates growth process is determined to be 206 kJ/mol.

Failure mechanisms in unirradiated ZIRLO® cladding with radial hydrides

J. Ruiz-Hervias et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between hydride morphology, especially radial hydrides, stress state, and failure mechanisms associated with the ring compression test (RCT). The results show that the reorientation of hydrides significantly affects the RCT outcomes, confirming the interaction between hydride location and continuity with the hoop stress on crack initiation.

(S)TEM/EDS study of native precipitates and irradiation induced Nb-rich platelets in high-burnup M5®

Zefeng Yu et al.

Summary: Researchers investigated precipitates and dislocation loops in high-burnup M5(R) using (S)TEM equipped with EDS. They found Nb-rich native precipitates in different phases, with most remaining beta-Nb in the metal and oxidizing in the oxide. Additionally, Nb-rich irradiation-induced precipitates (IIPs) were observed in the metal matrix. The study also reported the existence of IIPs in the oxide within about 1.5 μm from the O/M interface.

Oxidation-resistant coating of FeCrAl on Zr-alloy tubes using 3D printing direct energy deposition

Il-Hyun Kim et al.

Summary: FeCrAl coating on Zr-alloys using 3D printing technology improves their oxidation resistance, with the FeCrAl layer increasing the oxidation resistance of Zr-alloys by approximately 50 times. Experimentation revealed a thin Al2O3 layer formed on the FeCrAl surface, while a thick ZrO2 layer formed on Zr-alloy without coating.
