Elastic and plastic mechanical properties of nanoparticle-based silica aerogels and xerogels

Michal Marszewski et al.

Summary: This study reports and analyzes the effective Young's modulus and hardness of nanoparticle-based silica aerogels and xerogels for the first time. It was found that the effective hardness is linearly proportional to the effective Young's modulus. Deposition of an alumina coating was demonstrated as a way to increase the hardness of these mesoporous monoliths.

Anticorrosion properties of silica-based sol-gel coatings on steel - The influence of hydrolysis and condensation conditions

Jolanta Gasiorek et al.

Summary: This paper presents indirect methods to define the change in the rates of hydrolysis and condensation reactions of a silica oxide network. Different solvents used in the reaction environment were found to have a significant impact on the reaction rates and functional properties of the obtained silica coatings. The morphology and structure changes were investigated using various characterization techniques. The results showed that the coatings synthesized in a methanol environment had a higher polarization resistance, while the ethanol-based coatings had the greatest thickness. The acetone-based coatings exhibited higher detachment force. Propanol and butanol contributed to defects and decreased protection properties, particularly in coatings based on propanol. No statistically significant influence of solvents was observed on the thickness of coatings prepared with butanol or acetone.

Summary: Silicon-based aerogel (SA) has exceptional properties in thermal insulation, but intrinsic defects such as low strength and poor toughness restrict their practical applications. Composition optimization and microstructure reconstruction are convincing strategies to enhance their mechanical and thermal insulation properties and reduce cost.

Modeling and Simulation of the Aggregation and the Structural and Mechanical Properties of Silica Aerogels

Rasul Abdusalamov et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of silica aerogels are determined by their network connectivity, which was studied in this paper by generating computational models using the DLCA algorithm. The influence of model parameters on aerogel structures and deformation under mechanical loads was investigated, with a focus on structural and fractal properties. The DLCA models were analyzed for mechanical properties using finite element simulations, showing a correlation between elastic moduli and relative density.
