A novel precursor for preparing SiBNC ceramic fibers was successfully prepared via co-polymerization of ttichlorosilane (SiHCl3), boron trichloride (BCl3) and methyl amine (MeNH2). The polymeric precursor exhibited good melt spinnability due to its relatively linear-chain chemical structure, which could be easily melt spun into green fibers with a diameter of 28 mu m. The green fibers were subsequently pyrolyzed to SiBNC ceramic fibers with ca. 24 mu m in diameter and 750 MPa in tensile strength. The polymer-to-ceramic conversion was investigated by the means of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.
