Distinct EEG signatures differentiate unconsciousness and disconnection during anaesthesia and sleep

Cameron P. Casey et al.

Summary: This study investigated the neural correlates of sensory disconnection and unconsciousness using a novel serial awakening paradigm. The results showed that occipital delta power could differentiate disconnected and unconscious states. Source localised signatures of sensory disconnection and unconsciousness were identified. These findings could potentially lead to the development of new monitors for the anaesthetic state and provide insights into the biology of arousal.

Quantifying arousal and awareness in altered states of consciousness using interpretable deep learning

Minji Lee et al.

Summary: The authors propose an explainable consciousness indicator using deep learning to quantify arousal and awareness under sleep, anesthesia, and in patients with disorders of consciousness. This indicator provides insights into the neural correlates of altered states of consciousness.

Deep brain stimulation of the thalamus restores signatures of consciousness in a nonhuman primate model

Jordy Tasserie et al.

Summary: Loss of consciousness can be restored by deep brain stimulation of the central thalamus, leading to increased brain activity in multiple regions and restoring the two dimensions of consciousness, arousal and conscious access. This discovery opens up potential therapeutic applications for patients with consciousness disorders.

Foundations of Human Consciousness: Imaging the Twilight Zone

Annalotta Scheinin et al.

Summary: The experiments indicate that losing consciousness does not necessarily mean losing unconsciousness, as most subjects had internally generated experiences during unresponsive states. Unresponsive anesthetic states and verified sleep stages indicated a disconnected state, distinct from a connected state. Activity of the thalamus, cingulate cortices, and angular gyri was found to be fundamental for human consciousness.

On no man's land: Subjective experiences during unresponsive and responsive sedative states induced by four different anesthetic agents

Summary: The study found that subjective experiences are common during anesthesia, especially when using dexmedetomidine and S-ketamine. Different anesthetic agents have varying effects on the prevalence and complexity of experiences, although the differences were minor in the present sample.

Neural effects of propofol-induced unconsciousness and its reversal using thalamic stimulation

Andre M. Bastos et al.

Summary: The use of propofol in maintaining unconsciousness in NHPs results in slow frequency oscillations and decreased spiking activity, with thalamic stimulation able to reverse these features.
