Characterizing maternal isolation-induced ultrasonic vocalizations in a gene-environment interaction rat model for autism

Dorit Moehrle et al.

Summary: Deficits in social communication and language development are early diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorders. The CNTNAP2 gene is important for language development and is considered a risk factor for autism spectrum disorder. This study used rat models to explore the compounded effects of risk gene mutations and environmental challenges on vocal communication in offspring.

Differences in Startle and Prepulse Inhibition in Contactin-associated Protein-like 2 Knock-out Rats are Associated with Sex-specific Alterations in Brainstem Neural Activity

Alice Zheng et al.

Summary: The CNTNAP2 gene mutation is associated with neurodevelopmental disorders and altered auditory processing. The effects of the gene mutation on the auditory brainstem structures PnC and PPTg were investigated, and sex-specific differences were found in PnC firing rates. However, differences in PPTg firing rates and inhibition of PnC firing rates did not explain the decreased auditory processing in Cntnap2 knock-out rats.

Hyperexcitable and immature-like neuronal activity in the auditory cortex of adult rats lacking the language-linked CNTNAP2 gene

Summary: Loss of CNTNAP2 gene function in rats can cause auditory processing impairments similar to those seen in language-related human disorders, indicating its importance in maintaining cortical neuron excitability.
