Mapping brain asymmetry in health and disease through the ENIGMA consortium

Xiang-Zhen Kong et al.

Summary: Left-right asymmetry of the human brain is associated with psychiatric disorders, but previous research findings have been inconsistent. The ENIGMA-Laterality Working Group conducted large-scale studies and mapped the average asymmetry in healthy brains. They also found associations between brain asymmetry and age, sex, handedness, and brain volume. Moreover, they identified subtle changes in cortical thickness asymmetry in autism spectrum disorder and altered subcortical asymmetry in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Is human face recognition lateralized to the right hemisphere due to neural competition with left-lateralized visual word recognition? A critical review

Bruno Rossion et al.

Summary: The current research does not support the hypothesis that neural competition in the left ventral occipito-temporal cortex with selective representations of letter strings causes right hemispheric lateralization of face recognition. The relationship between literacy and right hemispheric lateralization of face recognition remains unclear, and further exploration is needed to better understand the underlying mechanisms.

Rapid response to galcanezumab and predictive factors in chronic migraine patients: A 3-month observational, longitudinal, cohort, multicenter, Italian real-life study

Summary: This study found that in patients with chronic migraine, unilateral pain, a good response to triptans, and normal weight may be associated with a persistent positive response in the first 3 months of therapy with galcanezumab.

Reduction in migraine-associated burden after eptinezumab treatment in patients with chronic migraine

Peter McAllister et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the changes in occurrence, severity, and symptoms of headache episodes in patients with chronic migraine following eptinezumab treatment. The results showed that patients treated with eptinezumab experienced a significant reduction in monthly headache days and episodes compared to placebo. The proportion of migraine attacks among headache episodes also decreased, indicating a decrease in headache severity after eptinezumab treatment.

Predicting the response to a triptan in migraine using deep attack phenotyping: A feasibility study

Michele Viana et al.

Summary: The study investigated the association between the efficacy of oral frovatriptan and clinical characteristics of migraine attacks, finding that unilateral pain, phonophobia, cranial autonomic symptoms, and premonitory symptoms were associated with treatment response.

Migraine and handedness

Summary: This study found that migraine pain is more likely to occur on the right side in right-handed individuals and on the left side in left-handed individuals. Manual dominance may influence the side of pain lateralization in migraine.
