Free-Living Gait Cadence Measured by Wearable Accelerometer: A Promising Alternative to Traditional Measures of Mobility for Assessing Fall Risk

Jacek K. Urbanek et al.

Summary: This study compared traditional laboratory-based measures of mobility with free-living gait cadence in predicting fall rates. The results showed that free-living cadence was significantly related to fall rates, while clinic-based measures of mobility were not. This suggests that data collected from biosensors in the free-living environment may provide a more sensitive indicator of fall risk.

Summary: The increasing prevalence of neurodegenerative conditions, such as Parkinson's disease, has led to a burden on healthcare systems. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for remote management tools for chronic conditions, with digital health technology offering significant opportunities for transforming research and clinical management. Despite existing challenges, a roadmap with clear recommendations can help bring us closer to the widespread adoption of body-worn sensors for improving the clinical care of PD.

Gait speed in clinical and daily living assessments in Parkinson's disease patients: performance versus capacity

Arash Atrsaei et al.

Summary: The study found that Parkinson's disease patients have similar gait speed patterns in clinic and real-life conditions, and there is a moderate correlation between medication dosage and the difference between the two. During home assessments, only about 3% of strides had speeds equal or greater than those in the clinic, occurring mainly during long walking bouts before noon, around 26 minutes after medication intake, peaking 3 hours after Levodopa intake. These results suggest the potential for better controlling medication intake in PD patients by considering both functional capacity and continuous monitoring of gait speed in real-life conditions.
