Clofazimine for the treatment of tuberculosis

Jacob A. M. Stadler et al.

Summary: Shorter and fully oral regimens with new and repurposed drugs have become the first-choice treatment for drug-resistant tuberculosis. Clofazimine, a repurposed drug used in leprosy treatment, has shown promising results in treating drug-resistant tuberculosis. However, the safety, dosing considerations, adverse effects, and resistance mechanisms of clofazimine still need further research and evaluation.

Niclosamide as a Repurposing Drug against Corynebacterium striatum Multidrug-Resistant Infections

Veronica Folliero et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the antimicrobial activity of the anthelmintic drug niclosamide against multidrug-resistant Corynebacterium striatum, showing bactericidal action and biofilm biomass degradation. These findings suggest the potential repurposing of niclosamide as a therapeutic agent for C. striatum infections.

Diarylureas: Repositioning from Antitumor to Antimicrobials or Multi-Target Agents against New Pandemics

Alessia Catalano et al.

Summary: Antimicrobials have played a significant role in advancing medical treatments, but the emergence of antimicrobial resistance poses challenges in treating infectious diseases. The identification of new coronavirus variants, such as the one in the UK, underscores the urgent need for safe and potent antimicrobials and antivirals. Efforts to develop multitarget therapeutic strategies using compounds like diarylureas are seen as promising for combating new pandemic events.

Leveraging Peptaibol Biosynthetic Promiscuity for Next-Generation Antiplasmodial Therapeutics

Jin Woo Lee et al.

Summary: Malaria, affecting over 200 million people annually, remains a global threat. Through systematic testing of fungal extracts from the University of Oklahoma Citizen Science Soil Collection Program, bioactive compounds with potent antiplasmodial activity and low toxicity against human cells were identified, with a new metabolite, harzianin NPDG I, showing remarkable potency and selectivity. This study highlights the potential of fungal diversity in developing novel anti-malarial compounds.
