Structure-Property Relationship of Three 2-Chloro-4-fluoro Chalcone Derivatives: A Comprehensive Study on Linear and Non-linear Optical Properties, Structural Characterizations and Density Functional Theory

Qin Ai Wong et al.

Summary: This work focused on the relationship between molecular structure and non-linear optical (NLO) property of the chalcone derivatives. Through push-pull effect, donor-acceptor substitutions were made on both rings to develop excellent NLO materials. Three new crystals of 2-chloro-4-fluorochalcone derivatives with different donor end groups were synthesized to evaluate the donor dependence of their second-order hyperpolarizability. The grown crystals were confirmed and analyzed, and their intermolecular interactions were visualized. The electronic absorption spectrums were investigated to discuss the impact of intramolecular charge transfer and energy gap on NLO properties. Theoretical electronic properties were compared with experimental results. Thermally-induced NLO parameters were measured, and the solution samples showed promising NLO performance.

Anthracene-based fluorescent probe: Synthesis, characterization, aggregation-induced emission, mechanochromism, and sensing of nitroaromatics in aqueous media

Kumaraguru Duraimurugan et al.

Summary: The synthesis of anthracene-based chalcone (S1) exhibited unique fluorescent properties for detecting picric acid (PA) and 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP) in an aqueous solution. The results suggest that S1 can be a promising material for developing test strip-based sensor devices to detect toxic and explosive aromatic nitro molecules.

Design of photoinitiating systems based on the chalcone-anthracene scaffold for LED cationic photopolymerization and application in 3D printing

Shaohui Liu et al.

Summary: LEDs were used as irradiation sources in photopolymerization, with anthracene derivatives showing promising photoinitiation abilities for acrylates and epoxides. The in-silico designed chalcone-anthracenes exhibited broad absorption bands, leading to high final function conversions in the presence of three-component photoinitiating systems. The derivatives also sensitized sulfonium salts and showed good spatial resolution in 3D printing applications.

Recent advances on chalcone-based photoinitiators of polymerization

Malika Ibrahim-Ouali et al.

Summary: Photopolymerization is undergoing a revolution with the availability of cheap, lightweight, compact, and energy-saving light sources like LEDs. Research is actively seeking photoinitiating systems that can be activated under low light intensity in the visible range and exhibit high reactivity even under air, with chalcones being a promising candidate fitting these requirements. Recent developments in chalcone-based photoinitiating systems are discussed in this review, highlighting their crucial importance through comparisons with benchmark photoinitiators.
