Synthesis of hydrophobic associative polymers to improve the rheological and filtration performance of drilling fluids under high temperature and high salinity conditions

Jinsheng Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel thickening and fluid loss control additive (ASML) with significant hydrophobic association characteristics as well as outstanding temperature- and salt-resistance was synthesized. The experiments showed that ASML can improve the networked structure and reduce the fluid loss of drilling fluid under high temperature and high salinity conditions.

Using XPS and FTIR spectroscopies to investigate polyamide 11 degradation on aging flexible risers

Frederico G. de A. Dias et al.

Summary: Polyamide 11 is a commonly used thermoplastic material for fabricating the pressure sheath of flexible lines in offshore oil exploration. Analysis of two samples revealed that during operation, hydrolysis, methanolysis, and transesterifications occur due to the presence of alcohols in the riser.

Laponite-polymer composite as a rheology modifier and filtration loss reducer for water-based drilling fluids at high temperature

Jie Yang et al.

Summary: In the process of deep oil and gas drilling, high temperature and high amounts of salt can negatively affect the performance of water-based drilling fluids. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop new high-temperature and salt-resistant drilling fluid additives. This study successfully synthesized a novel organic-inorganic polymer nanocomposite that has good clay adsorption capacity and pore sealing ability, which shows potential for being used as a rheology modifier and filtration loss reducer in high-temperature deep well drilling.

Zhipeng He et al.

Summary: The cyclization reaction of P(AN-co-AMPS) copolymer during TOS process was studied using FTIR and 2D correlation analysis technique, revealing different mechanisms at various temperatures. The comonomer AMPS was found to enhance stability at lower temperatures but accelerate reactions at higher temperatures, leading to oxidation and degradation reactions.

Fe3O4-CMC nanocomposite performance evaluation as rheology modifier and fluid loss control characteristic additives in water-based drilling fluid

Fahime Kamali et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that Fe3O4-CMC nanocomposite as an additive in water-based drilling fluid significantly improved viscosity and filtration properties, exhibiting superior rheological characteristics and reducing fluid loss effectively. The nanocomposite formulation shows non-Newtonian behavior and advantageous properties for resistance to water penetration and increased viscosity in both deionized water and salty water, making it an attractive alternative to conventional additives.
