Adsorption of emerging pollutants on lignin-based activated carbon: Analysis of adsorption mechanism via characterization, kinetics and equilibrium studies

L. Sellaoui et al.

Summary: This study used lignin as a precursor to synthesize activated carbons and compared their properties. The best adsorbent was used to remove acetaminophen and acetamiprid from water. Statistical physics models were used to analyze the adsorption mechanisms, and a double layer adsorption model was found to be the most effective in explaining the removal of these organic molecules.

Unravelling the adsorption mechanism of phenol on zinc oxide at various coverages via statistical physics, artificial neural network modeling and ab initio molecular dynamics

Younes Dehmani et al.

Summary: A novel modeling approach combining ab initio molecular dynamics, artificial neural networks, and statistical physics was used to analyze and explain the adsorption of phenol on zinc oxide. The study revealed that the adsorption process is multimolecular, endothermic, and involves hydrogen bonding and electrostatic forces.

Application of a multilayer physical model for the critical analysis of the adsorption of nicotinamide and propranolol on magnetic-activated carbon

Lotfi Sellaoui et al.

Summary: The study investigates the adsorption of nicotinamide and propranolol on magnetic-activated carbon, finding that adsorption capacity increases with temperature and propranolol has a higher tendency to form multiple layers. The modeling results suggest that both pharmaceutical compounds adsorb onto the MAC adsorbent via the formation of one or two layers, with propranolol showing a higher tendency for multiple layers. Adsorption energy is estimated to be endothermic, with physical interactions responsible for the adsorption process.

Enhanced adsorption of ketoprofen and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyactic acid on Physalis peruviana fruit residue functionalized with H2SO4: Adsorption properties and statistical physics modeling

Fatma Dhaouadi et al.

Summary: This research reports the functionalization of Physalis peruviana biomass with H2SO4 and its application in the removal of ketoprofen and 2,2-dichlorophenoxyactic acid. Surface chemistry of the modified biomass was characterized and the adsorption mechanism was analyzed using a multilayer statistical physics model. The results showed that the adsorption of ketoprofen was a multi-molecular process with molecular aggregation while the adsorption of 2,2-dichlorophenoxyactic acid was multi-anchoring.

Adsorption of ketoprofen and paracetamol and treatment of a synthetic mixture by novel porous carbon derived from Butia capitata endocarp

Carolina M. Kerkhoff et al.

Summary: In this study, activated carbon was prepared using endocarp of Butia capitata, showing efficient removal of ketoprofen and paracetamol from water. The activated carbon had a microporous structure with a high specific surface area and pore volume. Kinetics showed rapid adsorption for both pharmaceuticals, with equilibrium reached in 120 minutes for ketoprofen and 180 minutes for paracetamol.

Highly effective adsorption of synthetic phenol effluent by a novel activated carbon prepared from fruit wastes of the Ceiba speciosa forest species

Dison S. P. Franco et al.

Summary: The study utilizing Ceiba speciosa fruit waste to prepare activated carbon for phenol adsorption showed that under optimal conditions, the activated carbon had a high surface area and the adsorption of phenol was spontaneous, favorable, and exothermic. The decay behavior of phenol can be satisfactorily described by the pore volume and surface diffusion model.
