Reification and assent in research involving those who lack capacity

Anna Smajdor

Summary: In applied ethics, the question of how to treat others is a central problem. This paper addresses the ethical role of assent in research involving humans who lack capacity. The author explores the importance of consent and the concept of reification, and suggests that assent can respond to the moral need for recognition. The author discusses the possibility of achieving ethically important considerations through seeking assent when consent is not possible.
