Nyssomyia whitmani (Diptera: Psychodidae) Activity From Sunset to Sunrise: A Two-Year Study in a Rural Area in Northeast Argentina

Summary: We studied the nocturnal patterns of Nyssomyia whitmani, the main vector of Leishmania braziliensis in South America. The results showed that Ny. whitmani is present throughout the night and seasons, with abundance following a bell-shaped curve. The abundance distribution is influenced by temperature, and there are density-dependent events with abundance thresholds. This study provides insights into the behavior of Ny. whitmani and its relationship with human and reservoir contacts.

Population dynamics of phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in cutaneous leishmaniasis endemic areas of Kurunegala District, Sri Lanka

Summary: In this study, the population dynamics of sand flies in Sri Lanka were investigated through continuous entomological surveillance and analysis of climatic data. The findings showed that wind speed reduces sand fly abundance, while rainfall increases it. The higher prevalence of leishmaniasis in certain areas may be attributed to the higher density of sand flies. The study recommends systematic surveillance of sand flies as part of general healthcare services to prevent outbreaks.

Peridomestic natural breeding sites of Nyssomyia whitmani (Antunes and Coutinho) in an endemic area of tegumentary leishmaniasis in northeastern Argentina

Summary: The study identified the rural breeding environments of the Leishmania vector Ny. whitmani in the north of Misiones province, Argentina, predominantly in chicken sheds and below houses. The highest emergence was recorded in spring and summer. Controlling the number of chickens in sheds, soil moisture and pH may help reduce the risk of human vector exposure and transmission of Leishmania.
