Lung ultrasound to diagnose infectious pneumonia of newborns: A prospective multicenter study

Hai-Ran Ma et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the diagnostic value of lung ultrasound (LUS) for pathogenic diagnosis in neonatal pneumonia patients. The results showed that LUS had good performance in diagnosing and differentiating the severity of neonatal pneumonia, but could not be used for pathogenic identification in the early stages of pneumonia.

Lung ultrasound completely replaced chest X-ray for diagnosing neonatal lung diseases: a 3-year clinical practice report from a neonatal intensive care unit in China

Yue-Qiao Gao et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the feasibility and necessity of using lung ultrasound (LUS) instead of chest X-ray (CXR) for diagnosing neonatal lung diseases (NLDs) in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) setting. The clinical data and LUS examination results from 1,381 newborn infants with respiratory difficulty were collected and analyzed. The results showed that LUS could completely replace CXR for diagnosing NLDs in the NICU, with higher accuracy and reliability compared to X-ray.

Accuracy and Reliability of Lung Ultrasound to Diagnose Transient Tachypnoea of the Newborn: Evidence from a Meta-analysis and Systematic Review

Hai-Ran Ma et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of lung ultrasound (LUS) for diagnosing transient tachypnoea of the newborn (TTN) by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis. LUS had a high sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing TTN. The study supports the routine use of LUS for the detection of TTN.

Childhood cancer risks estimates following CT scans: an update of the French CT cohort study

Anais Foucault et al.

Summary: Recent epidemiological studies have reported increased risks of central nervous system (CNS) tumors and leukemia associated with computed tomography (CT) exposure during childhood. However, a previous analysis of the French CT cohort did not provide evidence of increased risks. This study, with an updated cohort and a longer follow-up, confirms the increased risks.

Specification and guideline for technical aspects and scanning parameter settings of neonatal lung ultrasound examination

Jing Liu et al.

Summary: Lung ultrasound is widely used in diagnosing and monitoring neonatal lung diseases, but there can be variations in LUS images and scanning parameters that affect diagnostic accuracy. The reliability of ultrasound exams decreases in the hands of novices performing POCUS. This study aimed to create guidelines for technical aspects and scanning parameters in neonatal LUS exams to standardize image acquisition.

The Outcome- or Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of LUS-Based Care or CXR-Based Care of Neonatal Lung Diseases: The Clinical Practice Evidence from a Level III NICU in China

Jing Liu et al.

Summary: Using lung ultrasound (LUS) monitoring to manage neonatal lung diseases can reduce the frequency and duration of mechanical ventilation, avoid weaning failure, and decrease the misdiagnosis rate of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Additionally, LUS monitoring can reduce the dosage of pulmonary surfactant (PS), decrease the mortality rates of severe diseases, and improve the prognosis of very low birth weight (VLBW) infants.

Summary: This study demonstrates that lung ultrasound (LUS) can decrease the misdiagnosis rate of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), thus reducing the probability of using pulmonary surfactant (PS) and decreasing its dosage, leading to better outcomes for RDS infants.

Summary: This study found that lung ultrasound in prone position is feasible in neonates with respiratory distress. The results showed that LUS scores were higher immediately after a change in position, but returned to baseline levels 1 hour after the change in position.
